I was totally stoked to hear about Flare this morning.

A software only version of FLAME! Just like I had hounded about in previous posts as a disgruntled Autodesk user.

Until I found out it was $40K. Apparently one of the sales reps for Autodesk told our producer it was to compete against Nuke.

Not at 40,000 clams it won't.

Maybe at $10,000.

At $8000 I think you'd have a serious contender.

and oh yeah, you still need a $250,000 fully licensed Flame in order for Flare to boot up.

flare was never intended to compeate with nuke. your sales rep was mistaken -it's just human, so don't worry.

cheers,
rayk

In a one-page article in WIRED magazine, about another part of Autodesk's business, they talk about having something like nine million copies of AutoCad and it's spin-offs out there. Combustion is a pimple to them, compared to their architectural business. Flint, Flame, etc. not much better, in volume terms. So it's not a surprise that Combustion support is less of a priority.
