Combustion from Windows to Mac
by Declan Smith on Mar 26, 2009 at 7:19:27 pm

I have had combustion on Windows platform for years, and I have finally decided to move over to a Mac platform (primarily because windows is not an operating system, it's a drain on the IT industry as a whole, sorry rant over).

Can I transfer the Combustion 2008 license over, and does the Combustion work on Intel based iMac Pro? Also, with only the windows CD, where can I get the Mac version? Most other software that I am transferring over comes with dual Windows/Mac installers.

Thanks
Declan

I can't answer the license transfer question, but yes, Combustion 2008 does run on Mac OS X - but here's the caveat: Combustion (even 2008) is only supported on OS X v10.4 (Tiger). It is not supported on OS X v10.5 (Leopard). It will run on Leopard, but it will crash upon exiting the program or completing a render. Combustion also cannot render 10-bit Quicktime files, at least in the Mac version.

Honestly, you're probably better off dual booting your Mac Pro between Mac OS X and Windows XP and running Combustion under Windows.

If you don't like this idea, I suggest you make your displeasure known to Autodesk, who haven't seen fit to qualify Combustion for an operating system that was released a year and a half ago (Leopard).

The writing is on the wall. Combustion development is at a near standstill, and the Mac version is an even lower priority for Autodesk.

What a shame :(. Combustion is probably my favourite application (even though it crashes from time to time). Not sure I want to dual boot, but I could try running it in a virtual machine using fusion, but I don't hold out for the performance!

I have ordered shake with the new apple system, but I know combustion and can get things done quickly in it. Although I was hoping to completely get rid of all my windows system (because windows is the most frustrating and inconsistent operating system ever created), I may just have to keep it dedicated for Combustion (and emulator X software sampler).

I could make my feelings known to Autodesk (and probably will), but I don't think it will help. It's a shame that such a good application has been neglected.

Running C* under Fusion or Parallels wouldn't really be a good idea, at least not if you expect any kind of decent OpenGL performance.

If you primarily do film compositing, Toxik might interest you. Otherwise, if you need vector paint, robust frame buffer support, particles, Quicktime output, etc. then Autodesk doesn't really have anything to offer other than Combustion.

You're right, it's a real tragedy that Autodesk has neglected Combustion. Combustion is also my favorite application, but I'm beginning to tire of its unaddressed bugs, its inability to support OS X Leopard, its glacial pace of development and its dwindling third-party plugin support. It's caused me to start questioning my dislike of After Effects and consider giving it another chance. At least AE has a huge user base, great support and a bright future ahead of it.

Autodesk is clearly much more focused on developing Toxik now, and Combustion will most likely slink off and die of neglect.

I could give this a go. Picking up the machine tomorrow. I only have the Windows installers for both C3, C4 & C2008. Is there anywhere I can legitemely get the C3 Mac install without having to buy a new license ?

I have emailed Autodesk (as these were the people who not only Authored the software, but sold it to me) and asked them the question about transferring the license or doing a crossgrade. They simply don't want to know, to the extent of saying:
"Unfortunately we cannot help you to solve your request"

Well what a fantastic response. A company that obviously doesn't give a sh*t about this product or it's customers.

It's a great pity as this was a good product, I have now bought Apple Shake, hopefully this will be more stable! At least it's supported on Mac platform!!
