Getting back into post - few questions
by Steven Timothy on Jan 19, 2009 at 2:35:03 am

I'm getting back into the post world and have a few questions, as I've been out of it for a few years. If anyone can help, that'd be great.

1) For PC only, which is the fastest (software based) compositing / motion graphics system to use at the moment?
2) Is realtime HD happening without hardware acceleration?
3) Has anyone used the intel i7 with compositing? Which is the best graphics card? I've heard that Quadro is overpriced and out-of-date compared to newer Geforce / ATI gaming cards.

Thanks,
Steve

These are only my opinions.....

1.) Fastest Compositing software? Difficult question. For me it is unquestionably Combustion because I know my way around it and I have a render farm set up to chew through frames. The popular opinion is the AE rules for motion graphics. I don't think the choice should be based solely on speed. Interface, capabilites, personal preference all figure in to speed. The point is not to pick the fastest software but to make you a faster compositor. I will say that AE having a huge following is a compelling reason to use it. Also it's integration in to the Adobe suite. For the time being I'm sticking with Combustion and as much as I love it it is hard to recommend as Autodesk does seem to be letting it die on the vine.

2.) Realtime HD? Very few good things are done in real time.

3.) Specs on I7 look very good. It should be very fast indeed. My next machine will probably have one of those. I don't think it's worth spending a lot on a video card for compositing. In Combustion for instance I don't use OpenGL for much other than particles and my consumer level GeForce card is more than up to the task. Use the money you save for more memory, better processor or a better yet a dedicated render box.

Thanks very much.

Does C* run on 64 bit Windows XP with 6 GB Ram?

No. Not 64 bit. Using XP/32 with 4gb of ram and the /3GB switch will yield 2.5gb for Combustion. That's about as good as you'll get with it right now.

I would like to use C* at the same time as an editing program such as Premiere, so I can insert my "masterpieces" quickly and easily into my editing timeline. Is it realistic to have both programs operating at the same time? I used to use Edit and C* together which worked fairly well (I'm dating myself, aren't I?), is there another combination which would work well?

The best way to enhance workflow between Combustion and editing applications is to purchase Automatic Duck.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Premiere is supported, only Avid or Final Cut Pro.
