Nasty codec conflict with AVIs

Really nasty. If I try to open any file type into Combustion that is not an AVI, Combustion couldn't be happier. If I try to load any file that is an .avi Combustion crashes IMMEDIATELY!
I have G-spot and it shows a gazillion codecs and filters but I have know idea how to go about figuring which codec conflict is the problem. I also have a full install of CS3 on this system along with Sony Vegas, InterVideo, Roxio and Matrox Axio LE.
After Effects, Premiere Pro, Intervideo and Vegas will all load the AVIs with no problems.

Thank you for the response.
I'm running WinXPPRo, Pack 2. I have a HPx8600 Quad Core, 8mb RAM with a Matrox LE PCIe video card and a Radeon x1950 Pro graphics card. How does one share an small avi sample here? I'm sure I can get one for you but so far it doesn't matter what AVI as all react the same.

If its happening with every AVI, its probably something unique to your system. I was doing some freelance work last week [don't tell my boss] using AVIs out of discreet edit and they worked fine with Combustion2008.
I'm a contractor for Autodesk at the moment but, unless otherwise stated, all opinions expressed here are my own.

Warren,
Yes, it is for sure unique to my system as I can open the same files on other Combustion installs on other computers. I realize that I have a codec conflict on this system but I can't find a method for determining where it is. Too risky to start uninstalling and reinstalling codecs.

If you can look in the crash log (Start->Administrative Tools->Computer Management:: Event Viewer->Application) you might find a reference to which codec is causing the problem. I've found surprisingly useful info about crashes via the Event Viewer log from time to time. Double-click on an entry in the log to view details. Here's a sample:
Faulting application Wacom_Tablet.exe, version 6.0.5.7, faulting module Wacom_Tablet.exe, version 6.0.5.7, fault address 0x0000dc4f.

Jeff,
My event viewer is largely clean. I do have one error like the one you listed. In my case it was for AfterEffects but I don't really know if that means anything or not. This is out of my troubleshooting league.
