Combustion 3 & Vista 64 a no go?
by Etienne Mitchel on Jul 8, 2008 at 12:22:07 pm

I am a Combustion 3 user who recently upgraded my computer system to a Vista 64 HP quad core 9450 system with 8 gigs of ram and a Quadro FX1700 graphics board. This past week-end I installed Combustion on my new system and to my dismay it wouldn’t start. It would come up with this error:

Combustion.exe - Application error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000142). Click OK to terminate the application.

I tried installing the 3.0.4 update but it still gave me the same error. Anybody knows how to get around this problem? Any chances Autodesk patching Combustion 3 to work with Vista? I know many people are still using version 3.

So you are happy to spend thousands on a new PC but don't want to spend a couple of hundred on updating your software to work with it? That makes no sense to me and I don't think it is reasonable to expect any software companies to expend any effort making old versions work with new OSes. That said, Combustion2008 doesn't officially support Vista either, although it works a treat on my 32 bit Vista installation, so you might want to download the demo and check before buying an upgrade.

I also can't believe that anyone would choose to work on version 3 when there are so many great usability enhancements in v4 and C2008. I occasionally have to do some work in v2 [for compatibility with EDIT*] and it drives me nuts. Seriously, do yourself a big, big favour and upgrade.

I'm a contractor for Autodesk at the moment but, unless otherwise stated, all opinions expressed here are my own.

With the new 64 bit PCs you will have to go into the DEP preferences (under System prefs/Advanced)and "allow" the Combustion.exe to run. It is a security thing that I have had to do with Sony Vegas and some other apps as well that go out to the web to "check in" to the parent companies. While I can't guarantee it will fix your problem, I am pretty sure the DEP is the culprit.

Nothing has worked out. My last resort will be to try to run it thru Virtual PC with Windows XP 32 as a guest OS of Vista 64.
