Portrait Format
by David Brown on Jul 5, 2008 at 6:25:18 am

Hi,

I don't have Combustion. I'm interested in buying a video compositor, but it has to be able to composite and output in portrait format. Can anyone tell me if Combustion has this capability?

Also as a secondary point - a long time ago I produced some sequences on Flame & Inferno. Is it fair to say that Combustion suffers from being restricted by Autodesk in order to maintain a market for the high-end products? I figure that Adobe After effects doesn't have that issue.

Thanks

[p.s. I'm offline next week, so apologies for being unable to respond immediately]

You can output at any resolution you like, so "portrait" is no problem. Before I worked for discreet [now Autodesk] I assumed the same thing but I can assure you that there are no such restrictions on Combustion development. Anything that they can make work in Combustion can be stolen from Flame. More restrictive is the small market-share which restricts how much money they have to work on the product, which restricts big-ticket items from being ported [it took two versions to get all of the Colour Warper across from Flame, for instance].

I'm a contractor for Autodesk at the moment but, unless otherwise stated, all opinions expressed here are my own.

Hi Warren,

Thanks for answering my question.

It's good to know that Combustion will render to portrait format, so it's now on my (very) short list.

I hear what you're saying on the secondary point. Putting the capability of hardware to one side for a moment. I'm not sure that I'm fully convinced, as the market for a version of Combustion which had all the functionality of Flame/Inferno etc but at the Combustion price point, would surely be much greater, as it would be more accessable (cost-wise) to the wider market. So somewhere in there, Autodesk business analysts & marketing staff must have a say in each products propostion and capabilities.

Thanks once again for your help!
