final footage is split in half
by hansen frank on May 11, 2008 at 3:51:34 pm

Hi again,

i used a normal video footage, used a particle panel, and i got a half split video as output. Only the lower half of the video is given as output.
This happens each time i use any kind of particles(it happens also if i only insert one particle panel in the footage without adding any particle emitter).

This is how it looks like:

anyone a clue?

I can't tell you why it is doing that, but I have had problems on some machines with certain video cards, which seem to have difficulties with rendering particles. In fact, on some machines, whenever I tried to render particles at Best quality, it would render the frame white. It was fine in medium quality, but the backgroudn footage was compromised, although the particles were not. The workaround I used under those circumstances, was to render the particles only, (you may have to put them in a seperate composite), using TGA's with Alpha. See if the particles will render on their own, and if not, try different quality settings on render. If it worked like it did for me, then turn off the particles after you rendered, import the numbered TGA's, and put them on top of your original footage. Since you are now working with images instead of particles, you should be able to render at best quality without issue.

I don't know if what you are experiencing is the same problem I encountered, but if it is, this should solve your issue.

I hope this helps,

Heath

It sounds like your video card doesn't have enough memory to render the particles. Using software OpenGL should fix this. Go to your Preferences and check the box in OpenGL tab, then try rendering again.

I'm a contractor for Autodesk at the moment but, unless otherwise stated, all opinions expressed here are my own.

Thanks for your quick replies.

- i tried TGA rendering of the particles..as well as rendering with medium quality. I got each time pictures of cutted particles.

- I have a Radeon X800 GTO graphic card.
I changed the openGL settings (triple buffering, force 24 bitZ buffer depth), but i couldn't notice any difference.

i just solved the problem by myself. I resized the composite (double height) and then used my particles and footage, later resized it back to initial size in order to "cut off" the top part which never works).
It's strange, but it works.

Hey Warren...

an aside....

I ran into the white frame in BEST Mode issue recently too....

However, knowing that the gfx cards in use at out facility aren't suitable for paticles I have been working exclusively in software mode....

this didn't seem to resovlve my issue...and I can confirm Heath's workaround....render them as a sequence and recomp them in....

Another dooise is when you need to track particles and you are using large plates....they don't perfrom well in these circumstances...but I the next time I run into this...I think the answer will be to track a paint stroke on the large plate...

then do a small plate with particles and use an expression to tie them to paint stroke....this ought to work nicely as the share the same cooridante systems....

but I've veered a bit OT here....

carry on....

Alex

Hello all. I am new to Combustion so i am very glad this forum is out here. I too was having this problem about "1/2 of the video being rendered in the Output". (just the bottom half..) It was so annoying. Without the Particle operator it rendered just fine. Add a particle in -- the top 1/2 of the screen was chopped off.

But someone on this forum posted the solution to UNCHECK "use Software Open GL" from within the FILE -> PREFERENCES -> OPEN GL GENERAL -> GLOBAL SETTINGS.

This worked for me and i am very grateful for the help!

Thank you,
Mike

Hello....

Just to Chime in....

I recently upgraded combustion to 4.0.5.288 on my machine here at the office...

and I suddenly began suffering the same problem....

Particles being chopped off in the upper half of the frame....

I am using an ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT card (a necessary part of this configration for video editing).

I wonder how much of this is is something to do with video overlay...

as when I rendered out a Quicktime file of the particles....It displayed wwith the same problem on this machine....but not on my home machine....as quicktime uses video overlay on windows to display....

Rendered out as a sequence (PNG) things seemed to work ok....

Seeting to software Open GL did not help me...

Just an FYI....

Next time I can try the double height thing if I need to...that's a good work around...

If you think it is a Quicktime/Overlay issue you may try setting Quicktime Preferences > Advanced > Video > Safe Mode (GDI only). This removes the DirectX acceleration, but can provide a way to get around playback and recording issues with QT. Or atleast it has helped me in the past.
