I have a 16:9 .avi file as input (720x576).
I work with the file in combustion 8.0.
However when i render it back to an avi file, the format stays 720x576, but it's not 16:9 anymore and the movie is stretched.

Make sure that the input footage is also set to PAL D1 Anamorphic Pixel Aspect Ratio. You could also try adding a Comp between the Edit Operator and Output Nodes, again making sure it is set to 1.42.

Thanks again for your fast replies...
i set twice PAL D1 Anamorphic Pixel Aspect Ratio. Then i added a comp at the end. However when i render i still don't get 16:9.
As render option i chosed AVI-DV, Video for windows.

What are you viewing the output video with? It sounds like the player or the outputted file isn't recognizing the Pixel Aspect Ratio setting. Depending on the player you can force 16:9 playback or you can scale the X by 142.2% or 1024x576 actual output size.

I have downloaded your file, and build a workspace with it. As Eric Craft said, Combustion doesn't recognize the pixel ratio.
create a 16:9 workspace,
import the footage,
in the "footage control" tab, change the pixel ratio to "PAL D1 anamorphic".
Check that all the edit operator are set to "pal d1 anamorphic".
you should have a 16:9 output
