Hi, i read on this forum that C* 5 is on it's way...That some of us wanted to be beta testers....i went to autodesk and checked it out...But, saw nothing about C* 5....is this only a rumor or a fact?

autodesk, like most software companies, legally cannot comment on future versions of the application. this includes version names and release dates. ie: you will never, ever hear an autodesk person say "combustion 5" even though it is public knowledge that "the next major release is on the way".

It has to do with stock holders and regulations. It is a CYA approach to stay out of trouble.
BTW, I was told that they had wrapped up most of their planning on the next release at the end of the year. This is probably why they are not excepting beta testers at this time.

Oh boy, I'm so glad someone brought this issue up! It's so rarely spoken of here.... Now I wish someone would write in asking for a comparison of Combustion with After Effects!
I had a fat prick know-it-all propspective client once from the 'music industry' who wanted everything done 'in the after effects' because only the after effects could be done 'in the after effects'. He said pay was by defferal and I'd get to show my work on 'the youtube' with linkage to a (wait for it) myspace band page. I told him to do it himself so, 'in the after effects', of course.

When I saw the subject line I was hoping also. Let's agree not to write "Combustion 5" anywhere (especially in the header) until it actually happens. I'm too fragile for these kind of little disappointments. Must..keep..hope..alive.....

I wonder if that rumor means the old Combustion team has returned. At one point some developers were let go and ended up becoming the Motion team, I think. Ah the joy of rumors :P

One of the many reasons for a delay may be due its integration with 3ds Max (one reason I chose Combustion over After Effects). Right now, the Combustion workspace material doesn't work with the Max 9-64bit version. Perhaps a 64bit version of C5 is in the works?
I would think that to be a logical path, seeing how heavily the program relies on RAM usage. With 32bit you are stuck with a limit of 4GB, period. That get's used up in a hurry, and since it's very common today for Quad or Dual Quad-CPU workstations to be equipped with 8, 16, and 32GB's of RAM, the vastly improved hardware capabilites are severely hamstrung with this software limitation.
If indeed Autodesk makes Combustion 5 into two versions (32/64bit)...like Max and Maya, then it will be worth the wait. If it plays well with Windows Vista, then a user can plug in a USB thumb drive to extend Combustion's RAM capacity (one of Vista's performance enhancements is that it will resort to flash memory before having to swap to a pagefile). When Autodesk came out with Max 9, it not only included a 64 bit version, but also saw a serious boost in overall performance. I would expect a similar result with a 64 bit C5, since they have to recompile the code and would likely choose to streamline common functions/executions in the same process.
My hope is that they also upgrade the Particle system to "Particle Illusion 3" (currently still at PI 2), and perhaps add Trapcode "Particular" (3d particles)and "Shine" (Volumetric Lighting effects) as well.

DNashj33, actually, some effect you already mentioned (e.g. Shine from Trapcode) simply could be done pure with Combustion. You can make it without plugin "shine" from Trapcode or another plugins.

Sorry, I meant how would you go about creating the volumetric lighting effect in Combustion without using Shine. I haven't seen any particle emitters that can replicate it, so I would appreciate it if someone pointed out how to pull it off. Thanks.
By the way, with Trapcode Particular being a 3D (not just a sprite)particle system (only available for AE for now), I would like to see it either in the next release or at least supported. While I like what we have in Combustion, I think it's well due for a bit of an upgrade.

Ow...i see..
what i said yesterday that "shine effect could be done in C4" is not to replace Shine absolutly, but we can do it the with some trick, just to name it..make a text comp. and add pan blur fx operator, change the colour, make a some movement (panning) for a sample: from left to right (and make a keyframes), etc. Thats just overview step by step. I know that trick because a several days ago i try to make it in C4 just to proof that C4 can make it or not.
