For Ken La Rue - 4.0.4 Update for Macs
by charles porter on Aug 14, 2006 at 9:03:47 pm

Hi Ken, is the update that Keith Hill just posted a problem with the one you mentioned demo-ing at Sigraph? The read me file does not mention anything about improved performance/speed. Infact, from the read me file alone, there seems no reason to install this upgrade on a G5 and to only to install it on IntelMacs.

Is this 4.0.4 update, infact, the update you were talking of?

Hi,

Yes this is the same version and you will see a big improvement in speed on your G5 running OSX.

Before the Universal Binary recompile could be done for the Intel Mac machines the development team had to recompile Combustion to the native XCode of OSX. Then we did a recompile for the Intel machines. The Intel based Mac machines will see the greatest speed improvement but anyone running OSX and Combustion 4 will also see a big difference because of the XCode recompile that had to take place first.

Wow, this is a lot faster and more stable, it seems to be launching about twice as fast.... everything just feels snappier...

I applaud Autodesk for their hard work on the universal binary Mac release of Combustion. Hopefully the days of platform performance disparity and general Mac-related negativity are behind us. Bravo, Autodesk! I am extremely happy that Autodesk has committed to improving and developing Combustion for the Mac platform.

My only suggestion would be for Autodesk to more visibly promote Combustion in Mac circles. Combustion is an incredible application that just keeps getting better - its influence can clearly be seen in Adobe's latest release of After Effects. I frequently make AE users' eyes pop out of their heads when I show them the things Combustion can do that AE simply can't, like tracking individual mask vertices or working quickly in the schematic view. Granted, each tool has its strengths, and AE certainly has no need to prove anything in the motion graphics industry, but I'd love to see more people become aware of Combustion's unique capabilities.

I second that. I am so glad to hear that Autodesk has taken this extra effort with Combustion. They could have taken the same attitude that Adobe did to wait more than a year after the release of the Intel Macs to provide an update. I am getting ready to buy a new Mac Pro and it looks like I'll be getting new C* seat to go with it.
Thanks Guys!

Yes, I agree too. With Combustion now Universal it only needs to keep pace with the desktop evolution toward off-loading more processing to the GPU. I also agree that Autodesk would do well to promote Combustion (in general). It doesn't seem like they're into marketing at all. Or, are they really afraid of it affecting their systems business. If that's the case, they need to get over it already. Desktop systems are going to get more powerful and more artists are going to enter the arena. They might as well give the best tools rather than everyone just following Apple.

Apple saw the handwriting on the wall and adjusted. I encourage Autodesk to take advantage of this and bring more of those advanced systems tools down to Combustion. I have a feeling that there will always be a need for systems in the industry especially as we see 4k images and workflows come about; not to mention, film's not going anywhere. The digital side is just stronger these days and is getting better.
