Personally, I'd go with the Sony, if only because it's more likely your work will be color-judged by others on a Sony. For those clients viewing on other monitors or LCDs and plasmas, they perhaps less critical about the image. A post house will most likely be viewing a Sony BVM or PVM monitor.

my purely anecdotal, unscientific opinion,

I thought the BVM 14G5E was out of production about 3-4 yeaars ago when they began making the BVM-D series. Still it could have been old stock and sitting on the shelf and thus is 3/4 year old. Even still, it is a nice monitor.

I had one and recently replaced it with a BVM-D14H5U. It had 1 option slot and was 800 lines (4:3) while the BVM 14F5E had 2 option slots and was 800 lines (4:3) and the BVM 14E5E had 3 or 4 option slots and 900 lines at 4:3. You kind of felt like you were getting your money's worth when you first lifted it up and tried to install it in a rack. The BVM's were made in Japan and weigh about 10 - 15lbs. more than the newer BVM-D's which are made in China. I don't know that there is a quality difference because of the weight loss (the D-series are easier to install) and look as great on sd but this was something that surprised me when I first lifted up a BVM-D series. I suppose it's just progress, everything gets smaller, faster and hopefully cheaper and better!

You can't go wrong with a Sony BVM monitor.

I'm not familiar with the jvc but I just looked at the specs though. It has composite and s-video and 1 opt. slot if you want to add component (A or D). It has pal and ntsc built in. (Judging from this and the price it is not nearly in the same class)

The Sony has looping component standard and one slot to add many other options. You need to add a card for ntsc. Let me know if you need any option cards, I have some brand new ones around here.

Hi Theo
Yes I have a 20D new in the box. I can sell it for $450.00 US (I'm in Canada). I think there is no difference between these input cards for ntsc of pal. I use BVM 14G5U monitors here whereas you are useing the BVM 14G5E monitors. The U would be USA I assume and the E would be Europe. The E designation at the end are 100-120volt and 220 volt with ebu phousphours and pal standard while the U models are 120volt and smpte phousphours and ntsc standard. The cards are in 2 varieties, decoder and interface. Forget all that, I just read the book and the card is 525/625 compatible.

One last thing, some of these bvm's I've seen won't take an sdi card. You need to remove the cover on the option slot and look at the connectors on the rear inside at the end of the slot. There should be 2-64 pin connectors, one above the other taking up all the space from top to bottom. I've encountered bvm's that have only one connector on the bottom half of the slot. The sdi card requires both top and bottom connectors.

2.input option slot which has 6 composite i/o channels which only has 1x64 pin connector at the bottom, and then its the kinda fixed board with

3.yuv i/o channels which i use at the moment

[Theo] "2.input option slot which has 6 composite i/o channels which only has 1x64 pin connector at the bottom, and then its the kinda fixed board with"

It sounds like you have an option card here. It should say on the top what it is. IE: 20D; 21D; 22X; 24N; 25P; 26M; 27T; 28X or 48X. You need to pull it out and look into the back of the monitor to see if it has the 2nd slot above the lower slot in the mother board. Some mother boards only accomodate the single connector cards like the one you have. The sdi card has 2-64 pin connectors on the inside end and 12 bnc connectors on the outside end. You need to check the mother board in the middle slot inside the monitor to make sure it has 2-64 pin connectors. I have seen some bvm monitors with only 1 connector on the mother board and thus the sdi card would not work with that monitor (even though the specs for the monitor and the card list it as compatible). You can email me at rennieklymyk@telus.net. I can email a photo of the sdi card if you like.

This monitor can take 2 different SDI cards the 20D and the 21D,. I guess the 21D must use one slot

This is what I'm telling you, the manual says it can take it but before you buy it look into the back of the slot to be sure your mother board has the 2-64 pin connectors. I have seen a BVM 14G5U that only had 1 connector on the mother board and the serial number was 200___. I was unable to install a 20D card in it. You are probably ok but you should check before you buy the sdi card.
