unable to get real-time playback of animation when I adjust the Animation Curves
by JesseS on May 9, 2006 at 6:37:51 pm

Hay All,

I am unable to get real-time playback of animation when I adjust the Animation Curves in the view port. I have to wait for it to re-cache the frames in the (cache Frame indicator bar). I set the in and out points for only 100 frames. I also checked my Cache preferences and it is set to 87%.

This project is not as heavy as the one in the "Combustion 4 General Demo Part 2" where Kenneth LaRue moves his Animation Curves in the view port without it re-caching:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5665905

So my question is how do I get real-time playback of animation when I adjust the Animation Curves in the view port; is it a setting issue or a workflow issue in side Combustion 4?

My computer is:
* Dell Perecision 380
* XP Prp
* Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60GHz (2 CPUs)
* 2G of RAM
* 512MB NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500

Thanks
-=Jesse=-

Take another look at the demo; it is re-calculating frames after curve adjustments. You'll notice that whenever Ken makes a curve adjustment, the grey band below the playback marker disappears, and frames have to be re-calculated. The underlying composites are still cached, so the render is quick, but a render it is. Also, take note that the animation Ken is working on is 2 seconds long, so things are not remaining real-time.

In other words, I doubt there's anything wrong with your setup.

Hi Jeff is right, whenever you adjust anything or any parameter within Combustion it will have to rerender the change to RAM. The underlying layers and operators will not need to be re-cached just the layer or operator's keyframe you are adjusting.

Maybe I'm not reading you right but... Whenever you make a change to a curve you are changing the animation over time, meaning that you must re-cache.

That's just how it works.

Yep, thanks for pointing that out to me.

With this in mind, I blocked out just 2 seconds of my project and it still is not as fast as Ken's Demo.

So, is it that I have a slow computer?

My computer is:
* Dell Perecision 380
* XP Prp
* Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60GHz (2 CPUs)
* 2G of RAM
* 512MB NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500

More info:
My project is a simple slide show with 16 images BMPs at 1024x768 with an animated cursor TIFF with an alpha & is 20x20 pixels & animates for about the same time as in Ken's Demo.

mmhh, do you use software or opengl for viewport rendering?
and what was your framrate during re-rendering?

--- In Preferences-> OpenGL-> Global Settings (Use Software OpenGL is checked)
* Am I looking in the right place here?

What was your Frame Rate during re-rendering?
--- is 29.97

Try using Hardware Open GL...

this will allow the composite operator to reprocess without re caching...

anything below that in the comp will have to reprocess if you adjust their parameters...

Wow, Combustion makes me feel like such a Newbie...

Where do I set this up in Combustion?

Is it somewhere other then:
In Preferences-> OpenGL-> Global Settings (Use Software OpenGL is checked)

Thanks for your help

Hey All,

I am able to get realtime play back by setting playback in Medium mode fixes the issue of realtime playback; it plays great and I can edit the "Tangent Handels" with out them jummping all over the place.

My question now is; what do I need to do to get realtime playback in Best Mode?

Thanks
