Audio is not rendering out in my AVI with "Video for Windows" codec

Hey all,
Thanks in advance for your help on this :-)
A newbie question here:
The audio works great in Combustion 4.0 but when I render it out there is no audio. What step/s am I missing here?
Notes:
* The funny thing is if I start the render after the audio starts in my movie say frame 100; then I get sound in my rendered avi.
* But if I start at frame 50 & end at frame 200 the sound does not render out.
* I am using combustion 4.0 and using codec "Video for Windows"
* I have the .WAV audio file linked to image 2 and it starts at frame 312
* I set the Audio Output to (44.1 KHz, 16 bit & mono)
* The audio file is:
Bit Rate:705kbds
Audio sample size: 16 bit
Channels: 1 (mono)
Audio samle rate: 44kHz
Audio format: PCM

Hmmm. Well, audio has never been one of combustion's strong points. :-) Can you render everything out using video editor? Render your footage out, preferrably uncompressed, and drop it on a timeline and sync your audio up. If you don't have an editor, you can download a freebie editor/compositor here:

I found a work around:
1. I unlinked the Audio
2. I edited the audio so it had about 3 seconds of no-sound/padding so it would start on the right frame where the audio was previously linked to.
* This works now, just fine. :-)
Thanks for all your help!
P.S. Can some one tell me why I can't just link to layer and have it work?

Jesse- I think you found what I've always suspected: Combustion has to have audio from frame zero in order to output it. I now do what Phil suggests-- add audio in an editing app.
