Which is better, Shake or Combustion?
and Why is it better?
I know there is a Big price difference. Shake is $3,000 and combustion is $900 but is there $2,000 difference?
I guess with Final Cut Pro Shake would offer a tighter integration but other than that can someone shed some light?

In my opinion one cannot really compare Shake and Combustion because they are in totaly different price ranges. Also they work together well, because Shake is weak with particles and Combustion has a great particle system. Shake has better matte painting tools though then Combustion. In terms of which one is best in general; it is at best hard to say because it is really is a matter of personal taste, and of what type of features and focus your looking for. I personally lean towards Combustion just because I have used it more then Shake, and its a good bit cheaper. But it all really boils down to a matter of what program will do what you need it to do.

An Autodesk sales rep called me today (about some other business) and said that C4 MAC is probably end of Oct/Nov.
I think the delay has something to do with staffing issues.

The never ending question. Shake or Combustion.
It depends on what your project calls for. If you are doing painting, motion graphics, color correcting, then Combustion is probably better for you.
If you are doing 3d comping with passes (out of Maya), then Shake might be better suited for you.
I love combustion, but also know that if I have a choice I would like the option to use the better tool for the job at hand. Good luck.

simon, you said shakes matte painting tools are nice... can you elaborate on them? i didnt even know shake had paint worth using. hard to (also) imagine doing that work without 3d space and only xform nodes... but im used to 3d compositors, i suppose.

They're like the paint tools in Combustion, but that is only what I have heard, my experience with Shake is so limited if you look on Apple you can get more details. But from what I have seen it would appear that Shake has better image processing tools then Combustion. If you look at the quick tours on apple it should be able to give you better details then I can.

morning!
well, the only big difference regarding to paint tools is that you have a very clever paint-on in shake.
if it comes to image processing or maybe it's the workflow you are refering, i can tell you that most of the shake tutorials you can translate to combustion almost 1-to-1. of cause, ops are named different and features might work in different ways, but all in all, workflow can be pretty much the same.

Something worth remembering: (ignoring the differences in applications for a moment)
Autodesk have a questionable history when it comes to Mac products, with both support and updates.
When it appears, will C4 be the last Mac version? Who knows.
Something you'll never have to worry about with Shake, obviously.

Unless Apple give up on all this stuff and just decides to make Ipods...their most profitable product to date... ;)
