Indesign CS4 - text variable with scope of book rather than file

I want to propagate a version number across a book, so I created a text variable called version but the scope appears to be limited to each file. How can I create a text variable across a whole book, specifically to implement a version tag in the footer (ie version: 1.3)

Have you synchronized your book to include text variables?
