enter makes new text box???!!!!!!

Im typing in indesign and I press "enter" to make a line break. Nothing happens but the red plus box at the bottom of the text box shows up telling me there is more text somewhere else. I click the box and it drops a new text box!!! I know indesign well but mostly for a mac. Somethings not right here.
Is this a default setting? Whats going on?

Adobe Indesign CS3
Windows Vista Home Premium
