Looks causing frequent FCP crashes
by Mike Halper on May 9, 2009 at 6:23:59 pm

I have Magic Bullet Looks 1.2 installed on Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. FCP constantly crashes when I jump to different parts of the sequence, play, or scrub. I can do this various amounts of times before the crash occurs. I have no problems jumping around the timeline, scrubbing, or playing in other projects or even sequences in this same project that don't have the Looks on them and have no problems.

The sequence is 78 minutes long and there aren't any other effects applied to the sequence. Media is all DVCProHD from an HVX200 (P2) with a several ProRes422 clips.

It appears to be an issue with Magic Bullet Looks. I noticed my upgrade from 1.0 to 1.2 seemed to not take full effect (Looks Builder still showed 1.03). I completely removed all Red Giant plugins and then reinstalled Looks. It runs much quicker now, but still crashes.

Any ideas on how to fix this? My crash report is below and is identical each time it crashes.

Re: Looks causing frequent FCP crashes
by Paul Reynolds on Jun 2, 2009 at 7:11:25 pm

Greetings Mike,

I am experiencing the exact same problem which has caused me to seek a solution. Put the problem to @RedGiantTweet and got some insight. Below is a recent tweet...

FYI: if you have MBL MAC, DO NOT UPGRADE to 10.5.7 yet. It is causing issue with at least 1 card (7300 gt).If you are effected let me know.

Hope this helps. I have the old 7300 GT and I am stuck in the mud. Have projects backing up and hoping for a quick resolve.

I'm having the same issue. Looks crashes the entire machine, not just FCP. Can't edit, open, modify, delete the looks filter.

Yeah i have the same problem. I updated to 10.5.7 for some reason and now magic bullet is crashing my system everytime I scrub to a clip with MBL filter on it. I also have the old 7300 GT graphics card. I have yet to set up a restore point, so rather than loose everything I am going to wait for a fix!

I resolved this problem by ordering the Mac compatible GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Video Card for my intel Mac Pro first gen. from eBay. Lame solution but, I am not willing to wait around for who knows how long for a fix. Everything works perfectly with the 8800 on my Mac at this time.

@RedGiantTweet just posted this an hour ago (9/1/09) - The Mac/Nvidia/Looks/Quick Looks issue is officially fixed. Please download the latest installer via the demo page and reload.. thanks

Yep, also having problems with MB looks and I have the 7300 GT card they mention. This is a major bummer that this problem has been around for months. I read a post that talked about a patch that worked for some people, anyone seen that? Is downgrading to a previous OS an option? Anyone find a fix?

Hi Steve, Did anyone contact you about this patch? If you have it I would greatly appreciate it otherwise it looks like a videocard upgrade!

Thanks,
Stu

Well I had the same issues and had tried everything with no luck UNTIL, I downloaded a simple Final Cut Pro preference trasher called "Preference manager" then I deleted my preferences with one click, relaunched FC applied a filter by MB and voila! Everything works like a charm. In short if you just get rid of your preferences it should work. I had this issue after loading a whack of new plug ins then running FC. I guess all the new plug ins jarbeled something up so the preference files were all screwed up. In any case it worked for me so I hope it works for you.

Cheers!
