There's plenty of people building "hackintoshes" like that which are generic PC components running Mac OS. Personally, I feel it's too much of a compromise that negates the point of buying a Mac.
Since the OS and hardware are made by the same manufacturer for a fairly small number of different models, the system's stability and compatibility has always been very consistent. When you throw various other hardware manufactures into the mix, reliability is going to suffer. Also, Apple's hardware and case designs are second to none, aesthetically and functionally, which makes them almost worth the difference to me.
You can also kiss any technical support goodbye; Apple's sure not going to help you on this one.
If you're on a tight budget, check out the Apple Store's refurbished section. Their stock varies, but right now they have a quad-core system that's $350 off list price.
If you want cheap and fast, just get a PC. If you want reliable, I'd go for the real Mac.

I did check the refurbished section, they currently don't have any towers for sale.
I was considering buying the new Mac Pro 4 quad on amazon.com but then I came across this.
Of course I would not go to apple for tech support, you're the second person who has told me this and I feel it would be a given...it's not an apple computer so why on earth would i go to apple if something breaks?
