Hello folks:

I am writing to make double-sure that this scenario works:

I want to be able to cut in both AVID MC5 and FCP7, in HD at 23.98, and work with either ProRes or XDCAM footage. If I buy a Matrox MX02 mini, will it be able to monitor these codecs in both FCP or AVID? Both to a 1080p display, as well as an SD downconvert to my Sony PVM monitor?

If you have real-world experience that this works, please do tell...it would be magnificent to have one box that works for both platforms.

Best, JIM.

[Jim Blokland] " If I buy a Matrox MX02 mini, will it be able to monitor these codecs in both FCP or AVID?"

Yup. Currently doing that myself. Avid MC5 and FCP 7. Same drive...same MXO2 Mini. Currently they both require the same OS and QT versions. That might change soon, which is why I often have Avid and FCP on separate drive partitions.

[Jim Blokland] "Both to a 1080p display, as well as an SD downconvert to my Sony PVM monitor?"

HDMI out to a 1080p display in HD. Component or composite out, downconverted, to a PVM monitor. Yup, at the same time. If the HD monitor lacks HDMI, and only has Component and SDI...well, then it won't work. The MXO2 Mini does not have SDI out, and the Composite connection is part of the Component connection. I wonder, does it have S=Video? I'll have to look.

Shane:

Thanks so much for this. Great news indeed. It's amazing to me how much mis-information is floating around about this box. I was wondering, do you have a sense of how the down-convert quality is, compared to the Kona cards? I'm currently using a Kona 2 and that is my 'gold' standard.

Any other observations much appreciated.

Best, JIM.

I haven't had a side-by-side comparison, but I have HDMI going to my HDTV, and Composite going to my 9" monitor. Looks good. Even tried it on my 14" Sony...looks good.

Another "Yes" vote here ... AVID MC5 and FCP 7 (and soon CS5) installed on the same system / boot drive ... can happily switch between apps w/ monitoring through the Mini. You'll want the latest drivers (2.0.0.0149) for 1080p23.98 support. Fwiw, am passing the HDMI output through a Convergent Design nanoConnect box for HD-SDI output.

Thanks for the votes of confidence, guys. I'm picking one up tomorrow!

Two last questions: what OS is the best for AVID/FCP7? Are the audio issues in FCP a thing of the past?

Snow Leopard is required for Avid MC 5. And the MXO2 Mini only works with MC5 on the Avid side. FCP 7 works fine with SL too.

The audio issue in FCP was just addressed with the latest drivers. Scroll down just a bit. Andy posted it.
