I am unable to make the version 2 software work with HD 708 captions. I have never gotten the track 16 versions to work, even though the older (ver 1.6) track 8 versions work. I believe I have all of my settings correct, although maybe I'm missing something. As per the manual, I have enabled 16 tracks of audio, I have the outputs of tracks 15 and 16 set to dual mono, I have discreet channels set on audio outputs, in the matrox preferences I have preserve Vanc,retrieve Vanc and embed in SDI all checked, I have turned off genlock while capturing. I can see that there is information being recorded on track 16, and in fact when I open track 16 in the viewer and play it, captions appear in the canvas over the parked video from the sequence.
I have been able to successfully and reliably use version 1.6 which puts the captioning info on track 8, I was hoping that version 2 and Snow Leopard would allow me to use the track 16 captioning method.

I will be down-revving to vers 1.6 unless I can find an answer.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Jeff

Sorry for the lack of responses ... unfortunately I have no means of testing to see if I can see the same problem and/or a resolution at my end, as I have no captioned sources (nor the requisite workflow experience) to test with. Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in.

In the meantime, can you clarify exactly where the problem lies. As I'm interpreting it, you are able to capture your captioned source correctly and FCP is recognizing and displaying that captioning correctly from the Viewer playback (via the MXO2 output?) .... but this is not working (no captions displayed) in your edited footage ie its not displaying or outputting correctly from the Canvas / Sequence playback. Is that correct?

Apologies for the naive questions. As noted, I'm fortunate enough to have zero experience of captioning workflows :-/

Best
Andy

Hi Andy;
Not exactly... sorry it's a very confusing situation to describe.

Everything works as expected using the older 1.6 version of Matrox software. That version uses audio track 8 to record the data.

However, currently with the version 2 software on the Matrox which is meant to use track 16, I can capture a tape with captions, but it will not play back showing the captions through the Matrox output. I know that the captioning information is there, as track 16 has a signal, and oddly enough, if I highlight the track 16 tab in the viewer, and play the tape, captions do appear on the output of the Matrox, supered over whatever is parked in the canvas. However if I switch to the video tab in the viewer, I get nothing. So FCP is not displaying the captions correctly from the viewer. I also get nothing when I edit the clip into a sequence.That all seems weird and wrong. I would be more willing to blame a setting if it didn't all work properly with the older version of software.

I wonder if there is anyone successfully using the track 16 version?

Thanks for your input.

This works perfectly for me. Both after capture from a tape and when using a 4VANC file generated by CPC. I am monitoring my HD CC on a vectorscope. Are you sure that you are selecting the CC audio track and routing out to track 16. Since you have done this before I assume your setup is correct. All I can say is it works here.

Hi Tony, thanks for responding. Okay, well if it is working there with track 16, I will have to keep digging here. I believe I have all my settings correct, but since it isnt working for me, maybe I need to triple-double check. The only routing selection I know of is to right click the audio controls in the timeline and select track 16 on the pop up menu... is there another that I am missing? I have track 15 and 16 set to dual mono, I have discreet channels selected, I switched off Genlock during capture, and I cant think of anything else...
Thanks

Jeff

How are you viewing your CC, both from the original tape and through the MXO2, scopes, monitors? CC data is not necessarily sent out from the deck or it may not be valid CC data on the tape. I know you see something there but maybe it's just garbage. I'm reaching here but...

I am monitoring captions on the Sony PVM-L2300 monitor with the BVM244CC option. It definitely decodes 708 and 608 captions correctly. I can patch the deck directly to one channel of the monitor to just check captions from a tape, the other channel is looking at the output of the Matrox. With Version 1.6 of the Matrox software everything worked as expected.

Trying to think of any other variables... I'm using ProRes422, I have the MXO2 rack with MAX, Version 7.0.2 of FCP; Snow Leopard; I have double checked that I am capturing and playing back dual mono on tracks 15 and 16, track 16 is indeed routed to channel 16 out, I have discreet channels selected, I captured with Genlock off...

The thing that is driving me nuts is what I was unsuccessfully trying to describe in my first post. I will capture a clip. While capturing, I can see the captions. after captioning it will not show the captions, however I can see a strong signal on track 16. I create a new sequence, edit the clip into the new sequence. It does not show the captions. Then, with the sequence parked, I can go to the viewer, select track 16 (or any audio track as it turns out) and hit play on the viewer, and captions will be shown from the clip over the parked image from the sequence.

I am currently re-installing the version 2 Matrox software, just because.

argh.

Hi Tony;
No, I've been on the road, so I haven't had the chance to look at it for a week. I'll keep trying things this week and see what happens, but at this point I am very close to just down-revving to version 1.6.1, since that worked. Don't know what we're giving up though from version 2...
