Capture software
by Jeff Handy on Oct 8, 2009 at 3:46:29 pm

Does Matrox have any basic capture software? We had such a beast with our AJA hardware, but I see nothing for our new Matrox units. Sure would be nice to have for our capture-only systems. Any third-party tools would be acceptable so long as they also capture timecode.

Hi Jeff
On the PC side they have the Matrox A/V Tools application, but there is currently no such app for the Mac side ...hopefully a port of that app is coming. You might want to head over to the Matrox Support website and drop them a note in their Feature Enhancements forum:

As to alternative Mac capture apps, you might look into Squarbox's LiveCapture Plus but I believe that may be DV only

Also look at Scopebox:
http://www.scopebox.com/

It is a great app for capture and a really fantastic set of analysis tools.

You can download a demo.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. Thank you, Olaf. I don't think I would have ever found that without the help of the COW herd. :D

Hey Olaf

Thanks for the link ... are you using this app for capture from the MXO2 at all? And if so, could you answer a few questions for me (pretty please).

Can you tell me what kind of device control (if any) is supported via Scopebox?
Very specifically, will it allow capture (from HD-SDI via MXO2) and correctly read and capture the embedded timecode (RP188) ... and how about HD-SDI device control too, any chance?
Does it allow for log and capture from device controlled sources at all? And if so, can a batch capture list be generated whilst logging and/or can a batch capture list be exported/imported? And again import is possible, what logging list formats are accepted?

Thanks much for your valuable time
Best
Andy

Hi Guys,

I have not used Scopebox to capture. I Use it to evaluate video, it is especially good for setting up chromakey.

I always use M100 or FCP to capture, they have such great interfaces I simply have not bothered to try the capture part. But I know you can.

I can try it out in the next few days, and I will report back, I am just very busy the next few days.

You can download a trial version of Scopebox. If you give it a try, let us know how well it works.

Thanks Olaf

I managed to get some questions answered by the kind folks over at Divergent Media ... they also noted that it is not really designed as a primary capture software although it does stretch to that function if needs be, stating "we have simple deck control (play/pause/ff/rw) but no support for jump to tc, batch recording, etc". Still, good to know that it has some function of this type if needed. Am waiting to hear back from them with regards to the app's supported deck control protocols ... specifically whether they support SMPTE RP188.

Best
Andy
