Don't Disregard Previous Post - I Still Don't Have Explanation
by Christopher Dalrymple on Jun 26, 2009 at 10:25:52 pm

I thought I did.
But I didn't.
The image is still underscanned and perched in the upper left hand corner of my Panasonic Plasma.

Connected via HDMI? Component?

What is your VIEW>VIDEO PLAYBACK set to? Is this HDV or XDCAM?

VIDEO PLAYBACK is set to MATROX MXO2 1080fPs 24p (1920x1080)
The footage is HDV captured as ProRes 422 (1440x1080) via Firewire before I got the MXO2.

Is your footage 23.98? or 29.97?

I captured it previously as ProRes 422 at 23.98.

Okay. Success. But first I re-captured the HDV as ProRes 23.98 with the MXO2. No luck - big interlace problem. Then I tried re-capturing as 29.97 (even though the clip properties say 24p) and then removing pulldown. The interlacing is even worse. Then I did something original. I read the FCP manual. Which says if the material is interlaced, use Compressor (not the De-Interlace setting but the Progressive Frame Control). So I look at the Browser for the later clips from the shoot in question. They say 24p. Then I look at the earlier clips shot and captured (as ProRes) together. These say 29.97. Go figure. I put both 24p and 29.97 clips thru Compressor and voila! Problem solved.

Some of the Panny plasmas have a Picture-inPicture function. You haven't accidentally enabled this have you?

No, I mistakenly thought I had bought the 24p model. Turns out mine was the model before it. I'm using the "convert 1080i 29.97 from 23.98" setting in video output. Works fine for color grading and the like.
