I recently hear about the MATROX MX02 MINI and I wanted to ask the experts a couple of questions. I have a MBP Intel 2.33 with 2 gig RAM and OS 10.411 and FCP 6.04 that I have been using to edit a documentary feature. I have recently acquired some 10 hours of BETACAM SD footage and want to include some of it in the sequence which is at this time HDV . The first question, is can I use this MXO2 Mini to import this SD footage via the Firewire 800 input to ProRes, and if so can keep the aspect ratio 4:3 with "black curtains" on each side? Do I have the option to up res to HD? in ProPres? Are my PRORES option limited because I am using FCP 6.04 instead of the latest version? ( I don't want to update the OS and FCP in the middle of the large project) Thanks for any help.

The mini connects to your laptop via the ExpressCard/34 slot and NOT via FW800.
You would be able to capture your BetaSP footage through the Mini (connected via the ExpressCard/34 slot) and capture that footage to any SD codec including ProRes. Then FCP would scale and pillarbox the footage when you placed it in your HDV timeline.

[Mark Shepherd] "Do I have the option to up res to HD? in ProPres? Are my PRORES option limited because I am using FCP 6.04 instead of the latest version?"

Yes you have the option to upres to HD. You could upres on input and so capture the BetaSP footage as pillarboxed DVCPRO HD, but NOT to ProRes. Your ProRes capture options are not limited by your FCP version but rather by your host computer. For unrestricted capture to ProRes then you need a quad core host computer, so the MBP's dual core will not suffice.

Hope it helps
Andy

Thanks, that answers a lot. I quess that there is no time code coming into the box to reference the original tapes? With all the software updates, is this system pretty stable and foolproof?

That's right, the Mini doesn't give you that functionality but you could use a cheap third party device such as a Keyspan USB Serial adapter to control the deck.

I can't speak for the Mini from personal experience but I've not heard reports to the contrary. If it helps, yes, my MXO2 (not mini) certainly seems to be pretty solid to date ... but foolproof? No. Just spend some time over on Matrox's own forums and you'll see ;-)

Best Regards
Andy
