Hi all,
This should be debated some time ago but the recent NAB can give some fresh data.

I have to move to a new editing system one of this days, and seems to me that Matrox is, at the moment, an "old move".
No 2K or superior for example. Correct or sily?

I know of the RT capacity, but there are new Intel core i7 and Xeons.

- Can we will use the Blackmagic UltraScope with an AXIO ?

What do you know of the latest Blackmagic or BlueFish444 boards vs. the AXIO?

I'm a PC user and want to keep that road.
But my new system will (if possible) have to last 3 or 5 years.
And the new cameras/formats (RED - 2K - 4K) are making me think twice.

I also believe that the Stereoscopic 3D will be requested sooner than predicted.
Will AXIO ever handle these formats?
Will MATROX launch a new "AXIO" board/system?

With the 'crisis' and the emerging formats, it's the worst time to invest on a new system, but mine is to old to keep working.

Thanks for any help.
Carlos

Carlos,

Axio is still the only hardware accelerated editing card on the market. All the other solutions (Aja, BMD, and even the new Matrox MXO2 Mini) are just I/O interfaces, some with up/down/cross conversion.

If 2K/4K/3D are important to you, there might possibly be a better solution, which is simply to use Premiere in native mode for those projects. For "usual" video, Axio is still the best solution.

That being said, we are at a wierd point right now, with Premiere 4.0 being rather half-baked in its first release(4.1 due out next month), and all the card manufacturers trying to keep up with their drivers. Right now, Axio doesn't fully support accelerated export with Adobe Media Encoder, which is one of Axio's huge advantages in CS3 and earlier. I expect that Matrox is hard at work implementing this feature, as well as others, but the full value of Axio on CS4 has yet to be realized.

One of the beauties of Axio is that it is essentially one large and fast FPGA chip, which is fully field programmable. So Matrox can implement new and upgraded features at any point. So hardware obsolescence is less of a concern.

If you want the fastest hardware available, even with octo-core i7 chips, Axio should be part of the equation. Faster processors and more powerful graphics cards only make it better. Much of Matrox's work on Axio (and the RTX2) is involved with making the system as a whole work in a more integrated fashion, for the highest possible performance.

I'm in the same spot.....

Currently my Axio is as buggy as any system that I have used in the last 10 years...and I it's due to the hardware and software developers working for separate companys and not together...

Every time Adobe updates their software, it takes at least 6-12 months to get my editting system back to normal.....

Technology changes so rapidly that no one can keep up together, unless they are delivering a hardward/software solution, and that is still pretty tough to do.....

With that said, I'm looking closely at the Avid Mojo DX..I just purchased a HP Z800, and hopefully Avid can hang on and gain some ground..and the price is only twice that of a Axio.....compared to a few years ago when they were 10-20 times more..

I would stay with the Axio because when it works... it works great...but for months now....NOT...

Ted Barnett ... now there's a familiar name. Had to do a search tho ... Alaska, right?

I ran across your last post (??) in January, 2008. You were running the Axio LE with CS3 on an HP xw8400 (or was it the xw8200?) and you said it "ran like a charm."

What are you running now?

Same system....HP 8400, but now Vista64....CS4....Matrox 4.O drivers...

I do have a new HP Z800 being delivered soon...but it has no X slot for my Axio......so I'm forced to buy a new Axio card or change systems....

I'm leaning towards a new system.....unless there are new drivers and a upgrade to Adobe Premiere in the next few days......

I've just received a newsletter on Vegas Pro 9.

Reading the specs, and I've never worked with it I ask:
- is it so much less god than Premiere?

I have to admit also that when Adobe presents a new version of PP or any update, to have to wait more than 6 months for a MATROX new driver is not a great way to work.

Obviusly we do not need to have the VERY LATEST version of all.
CS3 can do, for sure, from 96% to 99% of all videos created.
I believe that SUPERMAN was edited with PP and AE CS2.
How many of us have done something close to SUPERMAN ?

But in the end of the day we are humans... ...

I see so may people editing HDV and superior formats with 'render time' and they live quite happy with the fact.
I don't know.
I'm in love with AXIO for quite a while, but some new 'girls' are comming to town... ...

Carlos,

If you are interested in hardware acceleration, I'd hang in with Matrox. I don't expect it will take six months for Matrox to release companion drivers to Adobe's 4.1 release, which isn't even out yet. At that point one would hope that we should be getting back the functionality we have in CS3.

When you get right down to it, Adobe software has gotten pretty good; possibly better than FCS and Vegas at this point, and hopefully Adobe will continue this pace of development. Avid is still over-priced, old fashioned, and un-accelerated.
