Hi Justin
Sorry mate, but the MXO2 product line is not designed for use with Apple's consumer oriented line of computers. You will need a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro.

Hey Baz
As per the datasheet "Matrox MXO2 Mini works with Final Cut Pro, Apple Color, Adobe After Effects, and all QuickTime applications that support the V-out component." which the same as we already have with the original MXO2. The specifically noted Premiere Pro support is with regards to the mini's PC compatibility "Matrox MXO2 Mini works with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 on the PC and provides WYSIWYG support for popular applications such as Adobe Encore CS4, Photoshop CS4, and After Effects CS4; Autodesk 3ds Max and Combustion; and NewTek LightWave 3D (32-bit versions only)."
According to the press release the mini will be available in May 2009 ... maybe there will be PC drivers for the original MXO2 in the same time frame?

Boy am I glad I waited on purchasing the MXO2!! This has to be the best of show at NAB! For an incredible price, it also works on Windows as well as the MAC! Does anyone know if it will also do upconversion from SD to HD like the MXO2 does??

absolutely, just like its older brother:
High-quality 10-bit hardware scaling engine for realtime upscaling, downscaling, and cross conversion on capture and playback (See Specifications section for scaling features supported on Mac and PC)

I'm guessing that you've seen it in action at NAB? My one question (if you even know the answer) is considering this seems to be a direct competitor to the Intensity Pro, does it have the same codec limitations of not supporting 24p and some other progressive formats?
someone asked over at matrox, but no answer yet...
thanks!

no, you can't run MXO2 Mini and RT.X2. Matrox will have drivers for the uncompressed HD card to work along with RT.X2 and Axio. Unfortunately they have some driver conflicts that have to be resolved on this. So that support is Q4.

My only other question is the PCIe adapter for desktops a simple cable (external connector) or do you have to install an internal PCIe card for desktops?? It says you can order either/or adaptors for the mini...

Its a card Christopher ... you need to install it in the tower in order to provide the necessary connector for the PCIe over cable connection to the I/O box.

Am I the only one that's upset that the MXO2 mini can't be used with my iMac or Macbook? They couldn't put a dang firewire or usb port in the thing? The original MXO has a usb port.
Re: Matrox Announces Matrox MXO2 Mini by Andy Mees on Apr 22, 2009 at 5:33:21 am
Justin,
The MXO is an output only device that uses the DVI output from your Mac to pass the audio and video signal to its output spigots. The USB connection on the MXO is solely for the host Mac's control of the MXO device itself, its not part of the a/v output path. The MXO2 series are a whole different kettle of fish than the MXO. For input and output operations it obviously needs to connect to the host Mac via a bidirectional interface connect, so clearly the Mac's DVI out is not an option. USB and Firewire do not have the necessary throughput required to deal with some video formats such as Uncompressed HD, which is why devices that do connect via those protocols cannot handle such formats.
Bottom line, if you're finding you really need an MXO2 then you just have to face up to the fact that you'll need to upgrade to more suitable host hardware. Sorry :(

Hey Christopher
Its being marketed as a box thats cross platform so I should certainly expect it to ship with drivers for both platforms. That said, I seem to recall that when I got my MXO2 it didn't ship with any driver software in the box at all ! I had to log on to the Matrox support site and download it. Don't know if that was an indicator of a conscious decision on the part of Matrox to save costs or maybe they just forgot to slip them in the box... either way, its a safe bet that whatever comes in the MXO2 mini box, you'll be able to download both Mac and PC drivers straight from the website.
Re: Matrox Announces Matrox MXO2 Mini by Gary Bettan on Apr 24, 2009 at 4:12:45 pm
MXO2 Mini will support both PC and Mac:
Mac Pro and Intel-based MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 or higher
PC desktops and laptops running Windows XP (32-bit), and Windows Vista (32- and 64-bit)
We are told product will ship in May. PC drivers first, Mac a couple weeks later. When Mac support ships, so will Compressed HD and all flavors of MXO2 Max.
Re: Matrox Announces Matrox MXO2 Mini by Gary Bettan on Apr 24, 2009 at 4:27:02 pm
Sorry, but the secret sauce that makes the whole MXO2 product line possible is the PCIe extender technology. By allowing that level of data rate outside the box, you get all the I/O magic.
MXO2 Mini will ship with your choice of Laptop or Tower PCIe adapter card for $449. We'll also be offering a bundle at $499 with both.

Thanks for the info Gary!
Drop me a line and I'll get one from you when they ship!
I've really been wanting to try out PPRO CS4 on Windows with the MXO output.
Nice to know I can play with the Windows drivers directly upon release.
