We need a little bit more information. What type of hardware are you using to connect your VHS player to your PC?

Yeah thanks mate for your help here , i plugged the analog video capture device into a different usb port and I am now able to get it working however it plays in black and white on my screen and when i try to capture video i get a dialog box saying the following ...
Failed to build an MPeg cpture graph . Or unable to connect to the mpeg capture pin.---End of dialog box ---
I am using Ulead DVD movie factory 4.0 and my capture device is EZMaker USB 2.0 .

I have had a lot of weird stuff happening with different types of capture devices, it is always difficult. Did the EZMaker come with any software (other than Ulead) for capture? I would start with that at least.
