Home-burned DVDs don't work on all players

I am new to DVD burning, having just completed a family slide show. I created an ISO disk image using ProShow Gold and burned the ISO to DVD using an NEC 3520A burner. The disk plays fine on some TV connected players but on others the slide show will freeze and stutter about half way through, and images will break up with artifacts and white blocks (like large pixels) flashing onto the image. From reading this and other forums, I get the idea that home-made DVDs often have these problems. Is that the case, and if so why are they so much less predictable than commercial DVDs?
I read that the first remedies to try are using better quality media (I have only tried COMPUSA house brand DVD-R disks), and burning at a slower speed. Is there one media type that is most reliable? Also, the recording speed drop down list in MovieFactory 3.5 only offers MAX or 8x through 48X choices, no 1X. Is there any way to make it use a slower speed? I did check the "Perform test before burning" box. Thanks for any help,

I have had the same problem for years. It depends on alot of criteria. The media type, the player, and the burner. I have an expensive JBL system and it will only play dvd-r's. It will not play dvd+r's. My other 2 cheap players will play either one. I believe someone told me that if the player was built after 2002 it should play either one. If made before that, it may only play dvd-r's. Another thing that you might check out is www.videohelp.com. There you can check by burner model, or player model, which brand of dvd has worked well with others.
