Secondary Market for Good Used Video Equipment
by Eli Portell on Nov 8, 2008 at 7:42:47 am

Hey everybody.

I am a growing filmer, learning things as i go. I am finding myself more comfortable with filming and editing ans think it is time to upgrade my camera. Right now I am working with an unimpressive two hundred dollar sony handycam that does put out good quality at all. I want a camera that would be good for filming short films and possibly sports, such a skiing. I was wondering if anyone could give me some feed back on a good level camera that is at a reasonable price. I am not looking into a extremely expensive camera but I think HD would be nice. Are there any secondary market websites were other filmers that are upgrading to a newer model camera might sell there descent older cameras.

I am not sure if it matters, but I edit my videos with a stripped down avid program for burning the dvds and composing them. I use Adobe After Effects for effects that are needed. I also don;t know if there is a secondary market for editing software. I'm guessing not but if so could you help me out with that too? Im tryin to keep my budget as low as possible, but am willing to spend a good amount if necessary. Thanks.

so, what is the absolute maximum amount of money you are willing to spend. Because some people feel than anything above $200 is too much money.

If you are on a budget, nothing can possibly beat the new unreleased Canon EOS D5 Mk II for $2699, to be released in December.

I understand that a too get a good camera I will have to spend over 200$. Alot over 200$. I am willing to go probly up to 1500$, and that is why I am looking for a secondary market, so that I might be able to get a previous model of a more expensive model camera used.

Hey Eli.

No disrespect intended here - but how much did you pay for your Avid and After Effects software?
As in why are you only putting a value on the camera...

Before we start spending your money, it might be worth you telling us what kind of films you want to make with the equipment?

Thanks Mads,
My striped down Avid software was 100$ and I use it for composing my projects. Its called Pinnacle Studio Plus. As for After Effects, I have been using a trial download which is a day or so away from running out. I am planing to purchase After Effects soon with a better composer software, possibly Adobe Premiere.

What type of films will I be making?
I am a young growing film maker in Alaska and will be filming a good amount of ski and snowboard footage. I am also going to work on some more short films and possibly an independent film in the near future. Whatever the camera, I want it to be able to last a while. I would not be interested in replacing it for, I'm guessing, three to four years.

when you say "young growing", I assume you are 16 - 18 years old and not 25 - 30.

May I suggest buying nothing, and getting an internship at your local TV station. Work for free, or work cheap, and they will eventually hire you. You sound very ambitious, and they will probably ultimately hire you. You have put the effort out to learn editing software on your own with no money, so you have the ambition - let someone else finance your education (like an internship). When you get some money together (which will happen quickly when someone starts to pay you a small salary), you can then either use their gear (with permission) for your independent projects, or be able to afford your own new gear. It's a lot more fun to use someone elses gear for free, and get in to a career that you enjoy, rather than buying an old piece of junk.

Hey Eli.

I'm with Bob on this one - no point in you burning $2,500 unless you can make the money back.

However, if you are going to buy a camera, buy a consumer one that records HD to memory stick or the like. No moving parts should be perfect when you are out on the piste + it won't cost you much to replace if it gets knocked etc. If you really want to spend extra cash, spend it on a decent microphone and some good lights - those will never go out of fashion and soon cost the same as the camera. OK, maybe an extra battery or two for those cold nights.

Pinnacle Studio Plus is all you need - tell the story and don't be to concerned with the tool-box yet. There is plenty of free-ware low-budget software out in the market that will allow you to do everything that you would want to do - no point in spending $2,000. Maybe upgrade to the Ultimate version - will give you Boris Graffiti and Magic Bullet.

Just keep in mind that you want to tell a story. No matter how big your gun is, it will never make your story any better...

It always inspires me to see someone young, that is willing to put their own effort out, to learn these programs, and techniques, without anyone's help. I know how incredibly difficult it is to get started, when you know nothing, and push yourself to learn the basics, so you can edit, shoot, and make your first shows.

You are an inspiration to everyone that observes what you have done, and the OLD DOG EDITORS ON THIS LIST should be ashamed of themselves for not wanting to learn new things, when ambitious young guys like you will learn all the new programs, all the new techniques, all the new cameras, and go on to succeed, while the OLD DOGS ROT IN THE STREET REMEBERING THE OLD DAYS.

I would say "good luck" to you, but you don't need luck - you will succeed, no matter what the obstacle.

Well said Bob. As an old dog I remember being pushy in the past and getting on very well in an industry that was a union closed shop. Potential employers will detect the keen attitude as most of those deadbeats who come out of Uni and "fancy" working in the industry will fall by the wayside. Good luck in pursuing your career - focus on your goals and go for it.
