Corporate HD Video standards
by Aaron Stella on Nov 6, 2008 at 8:59:43 pm

I work for a global fortune 50 company in their communication resources department. We are currently discussing what video standards we will accept from outside agencies in regards to HD. What we are currently debating over, is weather we should tell our agencies to deliver whatever codec the video was shot in, but in file format, or if we should just say we will only accept, say, ProRes422.

We have a full in-house production staff, with more-than-capable people and equipment to convert video. Also taking into account that Final Cut Pro will accept most standard video formats onto its time line, I am leaning towards saying that we will accept the original codec that the video was shot it. For example, if it was shot on XDCAM, deliver it to us in XDCAM, and we will do any necessary conversion.

I am curious to find out what the people of the creative cow universe think. Please, what are your thoughts?

Hey Aaron.

If you are a global company then you are also likely to work in different frame-rates and much different sizes + surely your incoming material will be used in a wide variety of contexts.

Rather than getting hung up on what compression to use, I think you should stick to getting hold of the originals and make sure that they are straight from the camera or has the least amount of compression changes when generating new "copies".

To make life easier, you could stipulate what cameras you accept material from and at what frame-rates. This will also encourage your agencies to invest in the right equipment and you won't need to build the Noah's ark of playback machines and an even bigger patch field (to some in this forum, known as Bob... :-D ).

Next thing would be Meta-Data - such as location and content + copyright.

Knowing a bit of the world of corporate shooters, I would recommend asking for a digital clone of whatever was shot. That eliminates the "choices" that your vendor may make in converting to another codec (SMPTE vs. CGI digital levels, amount of compression, etc.).

Keep things in your control and you can guarantee quality. Master tapes/files should be supplied to you then you will be ok. It should be cheaper for you than freelance shooters having to mess about making conversions or whatever.
