I'm renting a Panasonic AJ-HD1200a. I need to digitize 1080i tapes. FCP can control the deck but I don't get any video. I've already downloaded the "driver" from Apple.
It tells me in the Log window "Preview Disabled" and when I try to capture it tells me "This operation could not be complete as there is no video".

Hey Mark.
You are in the wrong forum for this question. First go to the FCP forum and ask there, then the Panasonic forum, then the hire company - eventually you will realise that having two boxes with a cable between them won't necessarily give you a signal.
You need to make sure that the deck is outputting the right signal for your FCP to read.
And is there any flashing lights for reference - classic is that a VTR will have SDI set as the output..
Also, we keep on repeating this, but give us some decent specs before asking technical questions - i.e. are you trying to do this magic trick to a Lacie drive or are you intending to down-convert everything or is this for a HD delivery - what-ever, but it is important that we know why you are not using HD-SDI?
Good Luck

I should be beaten for possibly giving you wrong information, so I apologize in advance if I am wrong here - BUT -
via firewire, the native codec for Panasonic DVCProHD is 720p only. If you want 1080i, you go into the menus of the Panasonic 1200 to change the output format to 1080 (it will cross convert) - but to my knowlege (and I could be wrong) - this will not work via firewire (only 720p).
SO, you get a Blackmagic or AJA card, and capture via HD-SDI at 1080i, and you will have no problems.
