25i vs 25p
by Clement Hobbs on May 20, 2008 at 8:16:45 pm

Hi,

We're embarking on a studio shoot that will incorporate lots of greenscreen & vfx to be shot on HDCam at 25 frames/sec.

I have been planning on shooting this all at a progressive framerate due to the amount of vfx involved and the desire to have clean frames to work with.

In a recent conversation with the live action director, he told me he is very hesitant to shoot 25p due to judder in the images if we move the camera, he did tests in the past on another series and they ended up shooting at 25i for smoother images.

My feeling is that if the DOP knows their stuff we should be able to shoot in a progressive format regardless of the camera moves. We've done many series at 23.98 with absolutely no problems. Is this problem solely related to shutter speed/angle while shooting or am I missing something?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Clement.

first off - the format you are shooting is called PsF or Progressive segmented Frames, the NLE sees the content as progressive - it is played back as interlace on most devices (ie 25p always plays back as 50i)

I know of No VFX house in the US that would prefer interlaced acquired material over progressive for keying or effects.

Excellent point, if the camera man knows what he is doing then pans and zooms should be fine, as you say you have done it alot at 24p so do the same kind of work when shooting at 25 and it will look great.
