HD framerate questions
by jason levy on May 12, 2008 at 3:27:57 pm

The more I read the less I know.

Trying to choose a framerate for this project.

Shooting DVCProHD at 720
Finish in HD for xfer to HDCAM at 1080i60

Will also transfer to 1080i50 for foreign distribution (secondary window)

Should we shoot 60p ? 30p ? 23.98p ?

60 - better slo-mo when we slow down clips.. it's a contest show. Can this be transfered to 50i?

23.98p is this good for shooting action - lower frame rate? I heard that it's better for the transfer to the 50i? Not really looking for a film look, but we don't mind it. I also heard that shooting 23.98 can cause complications when finishing at 60i? No film output is necessary.

Jason

Given that you are all clearly waiting with bated breath to find out what happened I thought I'd let you know that given that there is a lot of movement and action we decided to shoot at 60i to avoid the judder and have a better looking master, and let the chips fall where they may for any future international sales.

We had a similar dilemma. We decided to use 720 24p because our Panasonic P2 camera makes the most efficient use of the card that way.

Yes I understand how that would be. Once the cards get bigger and cheaper we'll dump the tape as well. So you are going to shoot 24pn (not 24pA(dvanced)) and finish in 60i? What kind of project is it?

j.

Well, HD is new for us. Most of our stuff is web based so frame rate isn't as critical. The one major project we're working on is a 24p HD project anyway. We have down rough mix output to DVD and it looks great.
