Is it possible to capture to prores via firewire from a DVCPro HD deck (1400) in FCP?
Trying to figure out what the workflow is. Shooting DVCPro HD 720P60. Mastering back to the 1400. Need to color correct and do a few effects.
I was told that Capturing the DVCProHD via HDSDI was inferior to the native firewire capture.. but seems to me that working in native DVCProHD will involve more lossy decode/encode stages. Can anyone enlighten me?

Then why not capture to ProRes since you asked about the FW conversion from DVCPROHD?
When I was working in DVCPROHD, I always have captured over the HDSDI without issue, ( just like walter does at BC), however if you are worried - go to ProRes.

Thanks Gary. Are you saying that you capture to DVCProHD codec and finish in that format? What capture card are you using? I was considering a Decklink HD extreme but the dealer says that the scaling will be in software and I'd really need the (more expensive) Kona for best quality under that scenario.

Walter captures and finishes in DVCPROHD currently, I now prefer to use ProRes for the digitize and finish, since I have run into issues with the 8 bit codec on a couple of projects that were overloaded with compositing of multiple layers and graphics- For Doc's / episodic tv / industrials and such there is nothing wrong with working in the native Panasonic codec.
I am without question a KONA guy....
