3D cinema.... wow
by Hamish Boyd on Apr 18, 2008 at 5:37:10 am

Not sure where this post belongs....

I was interested in what others thought of where hi def 3D cinema is going and whether this is truly going to revolutionalise the film industry.

I saw U2 3D at imax recently. I was quite simply blown away by the aural and visual experience. It seemed so mindblowing on one hand but so incredibly immediate and intimate on the other.

The 'gimmick' of 3D payed off in my mind and in this film certainly didn't seem to be distracting or annoying, it was quite simply a brilliant way of enjoying cinema again. Which is curious considering the basis of the technology has been around for decades. Obviously, this is a vast improvement from the red/blue glasses of old, but does this mean we have a genuine watershed moment in cinema?

I would like to think so. I would love to see how drama plays out in a medium like this, my guess is that it could really work. There was something so intimate about the experience that it could only benefit character drama.. I would think. Love to see though if I am right.

Some pretty big directors are pricking up their ears to the idea after seeing its potential, the likes of James Cameron, Spielberg etc.
But we have been down this road before and heard the buzz about 3D cinema being the future and that nagging thought remains.

All I know is that is was quite simply one of the best cinema experiences, visually, that I have seen for quite a while.

What are all your thoughts?
In my mind I see no reason that we eventually would have our big screen tv's beaming out polarised light for our own 3D cinema.

Can you imagine watching sport like this??? wow...

over to you..

The future? or a fun detour?

Hey Hamish.

3D Cinema - there is a lot of effort going on by two or three manufacturers to get the community to invest into the tools. The reality is that they are to expensive and there isn't that many outlets that can display it + Joe Bloggs the consumer has largely been told to buy "HD Ready" tv sets, instead of getting the full HD resolution - so he/she isn't about to upgrade again...

Give it 9-15 years and 3D filming, editing and delivery will hopefully be as easy as doing 1D :-)

3D is very much alive and not as expensive as you may think or may be led to believe. There are tools out there, you just have to dig.

U2 3D was done by 3ality in Burbank. They used a RaveHD among other tools so we got to see lots of this footage before it ever left the studio and I to was blown away and knew the power that "the new 3D" would have if it could be put in the right venue. The sports stuff (football) was just as mind blowing if not more.

There are differnet methods for doing 3D, which I am by no means an expert on but have seen lots of stuff from them. Done right they can all achieve excellent results. This cat is getting skinned many ways....

I don't see the consumer stuff taking off for some time. Mads is correct people are not going to run out and replace that new HD TV they just bought, however sports fans are fanatics and once they see this stuff don't be surprised how fast they run to Circuit City....

Cheers,
Ramona

I went to a demo in the fall with our local HD gear reseller, they used active glasses running in sync with the projector.
Footage from all sorts of HD productions was shown and it truly was mind blowing to see this stuff.

Some local techs were at a camera demo last year whereby in real time, you could see a live 3D image on a monitor supplied by a 3D camera system.

I really hope this takes off into mass production as it will revolutionize the viewing experience in just as big a way as HD did to SD if not more.

'Mindblowing' is such an over used expression, but for this I totally agree.

I haven't really wanted to go to the cinema for a long time. The cost, the hassle, and the home entertainment system all conspire against walking into a multiplex. But I'll be definitely making my way into the cinema again if it involves ridiculous glasses.

I really can't wait to see how a conventional narrative film plays out with this technology.

On the other hand, I see my job getting a whole lot more confusing in about 15years. :)

Eventually all media will be 3d.. to be replaced eventually by 360 degree holo-deck type virtual environment imaging so it looks like you are actually there.. to be replaced eventually by live theatre. You are really there! What an innovation!

Live theater beats it all.... Jason thanks for the laugh.

I hope that not every movie makes it to 3D, that would be a disaster. The single most thing I like about the movies is the sense that it takes you away from reality, if they are all made to "feel real" then we all loose something that is very much needed to balance our lives.

Cheers,
Ramona

Hey Jason.

[jason levy] "Eventually all media will be 3d.. to be replaced eventually by 360 degree holo-deck type virtual environment imaging so it looks like you are actually there.. to be replaced eventually by live theatre. You are really there! What an innovation!"

Would it not be cheaper to distribute free LSD?
(At least we would have to work less too :-)

Beowolfe 3D was incredible.

I saw it played in my local theatre from a Christie DLP cinema projector with an overlay device over the lens.

The glasses/system was by Real-D.

I wouldn't normally see a movie like that, but the 3d experience made it much more interesting to watch.
