HDCAM SR SQ 4:4:4 10 bit log post workflow
by Redžinald Šimek on Apr 3, 2008 at 5:57:01 pm

Hi,
we plan to shoot feature with sony F23, and we just decided to shoot in HDCAM SQ 4:4:4 10 bit log @25.
Cause this is the first time that we shoot with F23 and first time that we have this kind of workflow i'm just wondering about workflow.
There are some options for online edit that we should decide about, is there anything special that i need to pay attention to?
About online edit, which is the best solution? AJA vs. Blackmagic?
Codec?
Anything else?

Thanks in advance

Hey Redžinald Šimek.

You need to start with how much money you've got first... And then look at work flow. But on a feature film, unless you're shooting one long take, don't ignore the off-line.

1st of all, you'll want a dual HD-SDI board and then you'll want a serious raid that can handle the data...

Biggest mistake is to invest all your money in the shoot and not have the cash or expertise to the editing. And there is other solutions out there than AJA and Blackmagic.

Thanks,
actually, we will rent facility for online editing, i will have offline ready on the dvcam.
Budget is not problem, we already settle this.
Editing facility offers me two options for online:
blackmagic DeckLink HD Pro and AJA kona 3. Both with Macola raid storage

My question is on the Technical side.
We never work on this kind of project, i'm concerned for picture quality, because i read that both, aja and blackmagic codecs supports only 4:2:2 not 4:4:4 bandwidth.
maybe i'm wrong?

The AJA log codec is preferred by most post houses that I know of in the US.
the LOG version it is a true 4:4:4:4 codec.

Now if FCP actually understand what to do with RGB video - I currently do not recommend to work in RGB video, if you need to work in RGB work with DPX files to maintain true rgb quality.

Redžinald,

Consider looking at the RaveHD. It takes care of the ingest (many of our customers are using it for 4:4:4, Sin City was the first), the storage, the conversions to offline proxies and the conform back to the original master material. Since it is frame based the VFX frames can even be passed over and dropped back in easily.

Consider when going from 4:4:4 SR to QT, if not done properly you will get a color shift. Different codecs handle this in different ways. Caution must be used.

Also consider how you will be doing the color work.

With RaveHD since it acts just like an SR deck, without the compression of course, you can pull the uncompressed frames directly into a da vinci via SDI or other programs such as a data-centric color corrector simply connect just like any other network mount.

Proxies generated from RaveHD can be everything from QT to Mpeg4

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance as again almost every one of our customers works in the 4:4:4 space and uses RaveHD on a daily basis.

Cheers,
Ramona
