I think you said you had one.
I just took a batch of 1080 23.98 to a dub house requesting 24 & 30 viz tc burn in and was told that 24 tc burn in was not possible with this format.
is this true?

Paul,
God bless you - I see you working hard, and asking all kinds of questions to try to figure out what to do at your facility. I can only imagine you work for a complete douche bag that is beating you to the ground, not letting you get any professional support that you need to get things working at your facility. I get testy with all of your questions on every forum, but there is no question that you are working your ass off, are very interested in what is going on, and trying very hard to do a good job. If I knew who your employer was, I would recommend that he give you a raise, and then I would give him the beating that he deserves.
The downconverted output to SD will show up as 29.97, not 23.98, and the time codes won't reflect what you are trying to match back to. I don't know if you are doing a feature at 24, or a TV show at 29.97 (59.94), but if you are doing a TV show, you can do your job at 59.97, and get the burn in's that you need from the AJ-HD1400 Video Monitor Out. This is an analog composite output, and will output to any VHS, DVD, or anything else that you want.

because of factors beyond my control, about 25% of show will be shot on hdcam 23.98 1080 and 25% dvcprohd 23.98 1080. rest of program is scenes from popular tv shows and features from sd 4:3 masters.
producers and network have not yet decided to finish sd or hd. (but it's now leaning sd 4:3)
hd masters are now being downconverted to dvcam for offline with 24 & 30 viz tc burn in. this apparently can be done from the hdcam, but since the dvcpro is 23.98 over 29.97, only the 29.97 tc burn in is possible.
none of this would matter except that the show will likely be finished again at a later date in 23.98 1080.

and by the way Bob I am the "douche bag" I work for - I've owned my own place for the last 4 years - opened it to get away from the douche bags I used to work for.
sorry for all the posts (although I thought that was what forums were for...), but since often times cross posting is the only way to get a decent complete picture from all the little incomplete bits of wisdom from each.
these forums are really the best place for info since the biggest douche bags I've ever run into are the so-called "consultants" in this business who always seem to have one way (their way) of doing things and can never seem to understand what you are trying to accomplish. I've stopped wasting my time and money. You can add manufacturer reps to that list as well as I can count on one hand all the ones I've met over the last 20 years who had a clue.
but thanks for your patience and info...always read you replies and rants.

Paul -
you ask away, that is exactly what these forums are for. I know that you are working hard.
How you get a SD master into a 23.98 project - boy, I sure don't know the answer to that one. There are many people on these forums (particularly those that work in LA), that insist on working with 23.98 Universal Masters, and not staying with 59.94 for HD. I guess this saves some space and bandwidth, but I still don't really get the reasoning for this, for shows that will wind up on TV. I know that these are delivery requirements that you are being asked for.
And don't forget, if you are mastering back to tape at 23.98, you will ABSOLUTELY need a tri level sync gen, like an AJA GEN10.
Re: aj 1400 dvcam downconvert Walter? by Paul Provost on Dec 1, 2007 at 6:55:26 pm
got the gen 10 (remember you throttled me on another forum for wanting to get two)
as for the 23.98 master for broadcast makes no sense whatsoever - (actually network requires sr 1080 59.94 so that makes sense)
BUT producer/film production company wants to finish 23.98 for them so they have a universal hd master and then make the 59.94 from that!
so that means the clips from prime time tv shows will go from sd 29.97 to hd 23.98 to hd 59.94. can't wait to see what that looks like!

If they are going to release this as a feature, it makes sense. If they are NEVER going to do a theatrical release, I would "fight" with them to let you stay in 59.94, because otherwise, you will be driven crazy throughout the job's workflow.

i've already been driven crazy for months. actually we are fighting for sd 4:3 finish.it really makes no sense to finish hd since the hd material is mostly just celebrity interviews (mostly talking head shots at that!) just upconvert the digibeta for hd broadcast with pillar bars.
we want to center cut downconvert all the hd (network requires all text/gfx protected for centercut anyway) and all the older tv stuff is 4:3.
problem is the producers of the film series this show is being made about are HUGE cats and its kind of hard to tell them anything. I just cower and in the corner and say "may i have some more porridge sir"?

well, producers have agreed to finish sd 4:3 and upconvert to hd w/pillar bars for hd delivery.
digibeta for sd delivery.
i've decided that dvcprohd tape is a sucky format. seems it will be discontinued soon. so glad we didn't buy a aj1400!
we are trying to get the project shot hdcam and we went ahead and bought a jh3. amazing little machine. now if sony would start delivering the ilink option board before the freaking decade is out!
