Insert Editing on Sony M2000 - Strange Problem - Please Help!!

Hi All
I am experiencing a rather strange problem when i am trying to layback audio onto my Sony HDW-M2000P
On the tape i've been provided, i cannot insert edit the audio - the rec light goes on but no audio actually reaches the tape - if i do a hard record, then no proble, audio lays down fine
Also, i have no problem insert editing to all the other tapes i have and have performed this process many times with no problem before
I have checked all the usual & there is nothing wrrong with the setup - as i said it works fine on other tapes, just not this one - the deck is correctly setup etc.
I sent it back to the viideo house but they have said it is fine & sent it back!
So, is there any know issues like this that have appeared before?
Maybe there is some type of imcompatibility issue between the deck it was created on & my M2000? (like old DAT machines!)
Anyway - i would REALLY appreciate any help/info on this as it is driving me crazy!!

do the audio meters bounce when doing the insert? the lights on the top of the deck - are the channels that you are trying to insert to lit up? make sure that the Assemble light isnt lit. also, make sure that the Cue light isnt lit.
