DV - HD workflow

Hi all,
I am trying to work out the best way to get a DV feature to HD, given access I have to particular equipment.
This is the situation:
* DV NTSC 23.98p advanced timeline and original footage.
* It is not practical to go back and redigitize this footage at uncompressed or pro-res.
* I plan to use Apple Color to grade. Planning on rendering out of Color with Pro Res HQ.
* I have free access to Kona 3, Teranex Mini & D5 deck.
I am trying to find out the best way to get the film onto D5. I presume I should be trying to get to 1080p 23.98 on the D5.
As far as I can work out the Teranex Mini will not help me if I need to get to 1080p 23.98. It does not seem to do 23.98 fps at all (only 59.94) and will convert to either 1080i or 720p (59.94).
Now, to confuse matters a little, I have previously used the Mini to do noise reduction on this same project when making a SD Digibeta dub. Obviously Digibeta is a 29.97i format only. I just outputted from my 23.98 sequence from FCP, through the Kona3 then the Terranex Mini and onto digibeta and it just worked.
I'm not sure if this means a viable option would be to go from my 23.98sequence through the Kona and then through the Teranex Mini at 1080i 59.97 onto D5.
The other alternative is to forget the Teranex Mini altogether and just have the Kona do the conversion to HD. Here I am also a little confused about the options. In the Primary (Native) Format dropdown menu of my Kona 3 Control Panel I can chose either 525i29.97 or 525i23.98. Now, I know that DV23.98p is not true 23.98p - it is actually 29.97 which displays at 23.98p using the advanced pulldown scheme. When I go to D5 HD do I then move into true 23.98p? If so, should my Primary (Native) Format be 525i29.97 and my Secondary (Converted) Format be 1080sf23.98? (by the way, the option in the Secondary (Converted) Format for 1080p is greyed out and cannot be selected. I'm not sure what the 1080sf23.98 format is. Should I convert to this format through the Kona, but then select 1080p on my D5 deck?
Also, when I convert in Color from DV NTSC 23.98 to Pro Res HQ, does this affect the advanced pulldown in any way?
Sorry about the complicated post, but this workflow is starting to get me in knots!!!!
To be honest, I normally don't get involved in postings where "I got the kit for free and I don't know what to do" lines appear.
However, I'm in a good mood today :-)
In my opinion, you'll want 1080psf (Progressive segmented frame, which is a frame in a field sort of way).
How did you end up going DV NTSC 23.98p - is this a camera format or FCP codec? And are you trying to destroy a feature film that was originally shot on HD?
Set the Mini (with or without Noise Reduction) to what-ever output you want to go to the HD-D5 - this should work fine. In regards to getting your head spinning on the frame-rate and grading issues, the best is really to observe the monitor from the deck, and see what happens there. After all, you're blowing your picture up anyway. In short, keep it simple, or find someone locally that can guide you through the mastering.
Hope this helps?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply......
The film was shot DV NTSC 23.98 advanced...
I know quite a lot about video and many workflows, but am entering territory that I am only partially familiar with and still learning about - I guess asking questions on forums is one way I can learn about things I am unsure of....
So....what are the advantages of the Psf format over just 1080p for a master?
By the way, after the D5 is made this tape will go to the dub house to make an HDcam master - does this influence whether I should be making a 1080P or 1080PSF D5 tape?
HD-CAM is a psf format.
The difference between p & psf is the way the VTR heads scans the frame - I don't believe that you'll be able to see the difference on a monitor. But there is smarter people lurking around here, that might tell you otherwise...

I have to wonder about the step to D-5. If you're going to HDCAM, go to HDCAM. Most film festivals take HDCAM.
Years ago, people would shoot in hi-8 and make a Beta dub to use as a source tape, thinking that the picture was now "Beta" and somehow gloriously improved. They would tell clients "We're editing in Beta". We did tests and found no improvement.

Hi,
Going to D5 because I have access to a production setup with D5 for free. Also in this pipeline are FCP with Kona 3, Teranex Mini, Hardware legalizers and scopes. So....all in all it is a great deal to get the project to Hi Def - then there will just be the cost of dubs to HDcam - not the whole mastering process.
Anyone here have experience with the Teranex Mini? Will it convert my DV23.98p footage to 1080PsF23.98?

Hi all,
After more investigation I have discovered that the Teranex Mini will not help me. It does not output any 23.98 format or any 1080PsF or 1080P format.
So....now I have to work out if the D5 will do the conversion, and if so compare that conversion to the KONA 3 conversion.
Does anyone here know if the AJ-HD3700B D5 deck will convert from DV NTSC23.98p to 1080PsF 23.98? If so, how good is the conversion and any tips on doing it well?
