First time HDCAM capturing (Sony JH3) in FCP

I'm a film student--getting ready to cut my final/portfolio film.
Shot On: Sony HDW-F900
Tape: HDCAM / 50 Minutes (23.98p / 1080)
This is my first time using HDCAM. My only previous HD experience was on DVPRO50 HD @ 720p. Any helpful suggestions, tips, or resources would be great.
Not only for capturing (although, for this post, ESPECIALLY)...but for work-flow and editing in general. What should I keep in mind?
And approx how many gigs make up about an hour of the HD files on a hard drive?
And, can I even capture my footage into FCP directly or do I need some other program(s) as well??...

You can also capture in DVC-PRO 100HD codec. Because we use HD-SDI and don't have firewire, I am not sure that you will be able to do this. Did you tell us how your computer is configured?

Can I pull it through firewire with the JH3, and have it be in DV for an offline? Or do I need to pay a post-house to transfer from HDCAM to DVCAM (then I can use the DVCAM decks at my school for free, to capture footage for offline edit)
i was under the impression that an hdcam deck can only capture through a Kona or etc...

it all depends on where i am at any given time... either way, i plan on editing from dvcam transfers at 23.98 through an external drive.
at any given time i will be on a g5, 2.66, 2gb's of ram... and at some points I may be on a powerbook apple laptop... but capturing using a g5 for sure.

Dear Victor.
At this given time (where ever that is?), I think you'll be better of getting help from the experts on the FCP forum. It doesn't sound like that your set-up will be able to deal with HD-SDI.

Yes, you can have the JH3 downconvert and play DV through Firewire provided it has the Firewire board (it's an option). It will properly convert time code and add 3:2 pulldown with a correct cadence.

So would I be better off paying a post house $910 for the transfer of 10 hdcam tapes to dvcam (with my own provided dvcam tapes cost included).... in this case, I dont have to spend $$$ renting an hdcam deck for two days because my school has dvcam decks.
is there anything I should know if I chose the firewire route from the hdcam deck? Either way, I want to end up editing offline in dv 23.98 ...
would my set up be able to handle downconverting through firewire with an hdcam deck? Or, is it only an issue if I'm trying to go through hd-sdi?

Victor,
Regardless of what you decide, there is one big thing you have to know about the JH3. When you play 23.98 as NTSC it converts 23.98 TC to 29.97 TC. The interpolated code can either be DF or NDF. Doesn't matter which you choose, but if you intend to offline/online this project you will need to make sure that all tapes are done the same way (preferably NDF) and that if you use the deck again for onlining, that it is also set the same way again at that time, if you intend to recapture as 1080i/59.94.
If you are doing 24p all the way, then, you should set the JH3 to NDF.
Sincerely,
Oliver
