It looks like Panasonic will be bringing out a new 1920 x 1080 P2 Camcorder by year's end. Maybe not a P2 Varicam but it sure sounds like it.
Studio Daily reports that "At a January 26 "Editors' Lounge" event held at Alpha Dogs in Burbank, CA, Panasonic representatives spilled the beans on the next big step in the P2 product line

This would be a step up from a Varicam from a technical picture structure standpoint. varicam is limited to 1280 (really 960)x720 and 8 bit. If this AVC based codec Panasonic has been cooking up ends up being anything close to what they've promised...it's going to be great stuff.

Some blurb from a Japanese industry site (great translation. Actual chi size looks like 3 x 2.2 million CCD. With the 2.4 million Grass Valley triple-CMOS coming, the bar is raising. I'd hate to have buy a camera this week.

Bad English in my previous post! Must have been that Japanese translation. There is also a really interesting podcast for editors filmed at that briefing about the new P2 stuff, on the Studio Daily site.

There are a million English teachers in Japan,But neither Sony or Panasonic will pay one of them $100,to come in for a couple of hours and write these things in English.
My digibeta manual in English would have been hilarious, had the camera not cost so much :)
