Getting work with an HDX-900
by samotnud on Feb 16, 2007 at 7:17:03 am

I have been giving some consideration to purchasing a Panasonic HDX-900. Has anyone ran into issues with corporate or broadcast clients not wanting to shoot with this camera because it was NOT a Sony 900 or a Varicam? Or are you finding most clients are trusting you to be the expert and deliver them their HD products however you deem best?

If you are marketing yourself to companies that produce for cable networks, like I do, HDCam far and away seems to be the industry standard. In HD, my main client accepts only HDCam, so I went with a HDW730S, which was fortunate because 24p is seldom used on my shows...so I saved some money over buying a 900. A few years ago I bought an SDX900 because I loved the look of the camera. But however great I think it looked, it was almost an impossible sell to Betacam houses that didn't want to invest in multiple formats for logging and editing. I sold it and bought a "new" BetacamSP that is still in demand. Between the 730 and my D50, I stay pretty busy.

I think the HDX, like th SDX before it, is a beautiful choice for in-house companies, and in many ways a superior camera to lower-end HDCams. But If you shop yourself around for steady broadcast work with an HDX, you're almost sure to be disappointed.

Bottom line? Good or bad, my big clients determine my formats.

Good luck-

John
