What is quality control?
Beyond visually inspecting the tape playback (HDCAM in this case) on a HD production monitor for problems, are there special techniques and procedures involving testing equipment? I have a VAM I would like to have QC'd before taking it to Color Timing.

QC is typically done as the LAST step of the process. Not sure why you'd want to do this before you go to color correct.
Many post houses have dedicated rooms/personnel with special software programs that will watch the entire program and list any kind of defects. These can be video that's too hot (above 100ire), audio that's too hot (above zero for longer than specified), dropouts, or other flaws.
Networks may also run your delivered masters through their own QC. They'll be looking for things like Text out of title safe, and all of the other technical specs.
Flaws are rated on a scale of "minor" to "fatal". One "fatal" and your master is rejected for repairs.

Thanks to both.
That's the insight I was looking for. After speaking to the DaVinci house, I've understood that the colorist could take note of any problems, such as drop-outs and so on. The information from the DaVinci session is saved, so I can replace one cut without starting over.
As carefully as I reviewed the 90 minute program, I still found a couple of problems just before I was getting ready to output to HDCAM, when it finally occured to me that I should try watching the whole thing with no audio.
The same post house is trying to get their new CC suite set up that's based on media files, not tapes. (forgot the name. first US install, according to them) This would have allowed me to skip the VAM step...
