Maybe OT - any concerns of corrective eye surgery?
by Ron Nakano on Oct 1, 2006 at 6:00:53 am

Hello,

I'm tired of my glasses and am considering corrective eye surgery, does anyone have any issues I should consider as far as affecting my ability to use video equipment? Things like being able to focus a shot, or any loss of sensitivities?

Thanks,
Ron

I know of at least a dozen cam ops who have has the various forms of laser correction and the only complaint was driving at night. Something about occasional streaks of light and I think they're beyond even that now.

However, talk to several doctors about how it will affect your close up and distant seeing and what will happen in 5 or 10 years. As you probably know, our eyes change a bit every day.

Good luck.

I asked my optometrist about it and he remarked about how hyper-sensitive I was to focus (when he asked if "this was better or that was better" my answers were instantaneous for the most part) and warned that surgery would be very unlikely to correct my vision to the same pristine extent they can do with glasses.

I would get a couple of opinions from several docs and make them get specific about the results that could be expected in the context of your day-to-day work and the risks involved. We all make our living with our eyes obviously...

My friend had the laser surgery and now though she no longer needs glasses to see distances she now needs reading glasses to see things that are close up. I would definitely get as much information as I could before doing it. Personally I prefer the devil I know... I'll stick with my glasses for now.

I had it done. Best thing I ever did. No more smears on my glasses where my greasy skin hit the eye cup. No more fogging up my glasses in cold weather causing me not to be able to see. Waking up in the middle of the night and being able to see what time it is. Turning the TV on sleep timer and actually being able to see the tv until I fall asleep. Granted the last two have nothing to do with shooting.

Its definately a life change. For me its awesome. Had something gone wrong though...I don't know, because I make a living shooting. Although small, there's a definate risk.
