HDV to 720p via Miranda HD-Bridge
by Scott Juergens on Feb 2, 2006 at 1:00:43 am

Has anyone used this product to conform HDV 60i source to 720p and if so how did it look and what frame rate does it spit out. I need to somehow get a 720p 59.94 signal out of a HDV 1080i source...I,m hoping Miranda's latest box will do the trick....I know there is a software conversion out there but being that this is for broadcast I,d like to head more to a hardware based solution....

The Miranda box will do this conversion from HDV 1080i to HD-SDI 720p59.94. But you may also want to look at the Convergent Design box, as it includes this capability as well as the ability to down-scale to SD-SDI. The box also supports HDV 720p24, which the Miranda box currently does not.

Hey Mike.

As far as I'm concerned, I have only met one person who was happy with the Miranda box. Where as most tend to either return it or wait for the software to be upgraded...

However, I told 2 UK convergent dealers last year that I wanted to do a test followed by a possible purchase of the convergent box, and I am still waiting...? ZZZzzzz

And since the regurlar suspects such as SnellWilcox, evertz, teranex seems to have missed the train, then am I not better off using a FCP, Avid Express PRO, Premiere PRO or whatever software than can deal with HDV for the capture. And render out 'highress' file that is then either converted and/or mastered out HD-SDI?

In the end, what really gets me is that in 1995 no-one thought that the broadcasters would be "stupid" enough to use the VX-1000 mini dv camcorder, and yes it took some time to see the Miranda's etc catching up - but today, one would have thought that the 'black-box' makers would have seen it coming?

DISCLAIMER: Just so everybody understands my rant. This is nothing personal towards Mike or Convergent. On paper that box looks like the best one around - and I am sure I will get to see one very shortly ;-)

Mads, I am also in London and have been waiting for over seven months to cut two films shot in HDV and needing the Convergent Design converter to HD. I am told that mine is now ready just when I go off on a trip abroad! I am assured that it has been well worth waiting for by the guys importing and testing. Keep the faith, it is better than the Miranda! Software problems with embedded audio had to be sorted amongst other things and the Convergent Design people have been working their socks off.

Hi Mads-
I apoloize for the long wait. Unfortunatly, we were at the mercy of the semiconductor vendors and their delivery of the magic MPEG2 HD decoder. This has been resolved and we are in catch-up mode on the box delivery. We should have a large shipment going to the UK in the next week.

I certainly believe that HDV, like DV, will find major acceptance in broadcast. Yes, it's not the quality of HD-CAM, but in many applications it is "good enough". The bang for the buck (or Sterling) is fantastic.

You are far better off to avoid the "Native HDV" editing, the render/conform times are killers. The best approach is to get out of the HDV (MPEG2) format and into an I-Frame (DVCProHD or DNxHD) CODEC or uncompressed as fast as possible. If you do this conversion, then HDV is just like any other HD format.

Stop by our booth at the Video Forum show this week, if possible.

Hey Mike.

Yes, I know that R&D ain't easy when you are relying on companies producing chips at relatively small scale (in comparison to your X-Box's, mobile phones, Ipod's etc). Good to hear that things are moving forward. BTW: what happened to HD-Connect (The one without the LE branding)?

Am I to understand that you can go HDV in and DVCPRO HD out? And will the Firewire work both as a I/O device? i.e. that there is a large userbase that only has firewire for their HD editing.

Hi Mads-
I wish we could do this conversion: HDV to DVCProHD entirely in our box. But the hardware DVCProHD CODEC is way too cost prohibitive to even consider. We can do this conversion in real time by dividing the task beteen our box (which does the HDV decompression) and software on the MAC/PC to do the compression (to DVCProHD). This flow works great on a desktop computer, but unfortunatly not on a laptop.

Best-
Mike

Hi Mike
I clicked on you banner ad and liked what I saw (from the posts above assuming you are part of HD-Connect). We haven't had HDV come to us yet but it's just a matter of time. We have had several Miranda products that haven't served us well so I'm glad there is an alternative. We edit in smoke and fire (only HD editor for sale in 2000) and needed a product to input HD-SDI from HDV. We do a great deal of HD documentary work (3 last year + 1 SD; 1 SD so far, 1 HD in March) so your product will be an important addition to our tech core as local independent producers start shooting HDV.

Hi Del-
I am fairly confident the video and audio ingest into your system (via HD-SDI) should work well. We may need to do some tests with you to get the deck control working properly. We are currently adding profiles for different RS-422 controllers (AVID, FCP, etc) as we have found each one to behave a little differently.

I do think you will be pleased with the overall video and audio quality.

Mads, you are in London right? Get along to Earls Court to the Video Forum, see John Schell on the Convergent Design stand and see the box working!!! They are now available for sale and it should solve all your problems enabling you to edit HDV properly - that is getting out of it as soon as possible after acquisition into uncompressed HD. Hurry, the show is only this week.

Hey Michael.

Not sure whether you are selling the Video Forum or the Convergent Design box? However, I don't really want to spend the better part of a day travelling through town to an exhibition 1/2 the size of the Apple stand at NAB, to see a "LE" box that only is carrying 1/3 of the features originally suggested early last year to be a product call HD-Connect - I am just not that stupid ;-)

As Mike Schell said on the 14th of Feb last year: "HD-Connect is in the works and coming soon"
The box I am continuing to wait for, is this; http://www.symbiosiseu.com/pdfs/HD_Connect.pdf

The thing is, I will want to put the HD-Connect up next to a Snell & Wilcox or a Evertz, look at the three signals on our very big HD Monitor with a very nice Tektronix scope attached - i.e. what HDV HD output is best; Firewire or Component?

Sorry, thinking tooo loud again :-D

is possible HDV 720 25p to 1080 25p with miranda or convergent design?, I need to capture hdv in european format and I need to do in realtime no tedious conversions.

Thanks!

Yes the Miranda's HD-Bridge can output 1080PsF25 HD-SDI from a 720p25
HDV source. In this specific case even if the HD-Bridge displays
1080i50
HD-SDI, in reality it's 1080PsF25 since the source is progressive.
