Film Look?
by Dustin Cross on Nov 10, 2005 at 9:55:25 pm

Aloha,

I just got back from AFM and was suprised how important film look was to all the distrubutors. If you are making an indie movie and want to get distribution I recomend you do everything thing you can to make it look like film. Even if you only spend a few grand and the final product is only ever going to be on DVD they want it to look like you shot film.

Now my question. Is there anywhere I can get a DVD or see a comparison of footage shot on different formats/cameras, digital and film and see what they look like at the end on standard def DVD to help decide which camera to use for different projects?

Basically I would like to see a DVD with the same footage shot from different cameras like:

FX1/Z1 60i stock
FX1/Z1 60i 3:2 pulldown w/ digital filmlook
FX1/Z1 60i 3:2 pulldown 35mm print telecine back to SD

FX1/Z1 25p stock
FX1/Z1 25p converted to 24p w/digital filmlook
FX1/Z1 25p converted to 24p 35mm print telecine back to SD

HD100 24p stock
HD100 24p w/ digital filmlook
HD100 24p 35mm print telecine back to SD

XL H1 24f stock
XL H1 24f w/ digital filmlook
XL H1 24f 35mm print telecine back to SD

XL H1 60i stock
XL H1 60i 3:2 pulldown w/ digital filmlook
XL H1 60i 3:2 pulldown 35mm print telecine back to SD

Varicam 24p stock
Varicam 24p w/ digital filmlook
Varicam 24p 35mm print telecine back to SD

F900 24p stock
F900 24p w/ digital filmlook
F900 24p 35mm print telecine back to SD

16mm telecine to SD

Super 16mm telecine to SD

35mm telecine to SD

This would be a great DVD for digital to film transfer places like DVfilm or Digital Film Group to have. I would be willing to pay to see something like this. If anyone knows of such a DVD please let me know or if someone has access to resources to make such a DVD I am interested to know how much it would cost to get you to do it?
