Non standard speeds on D20
by Kaspar Kallas on Nov 10, 2005 at 12:45:29 pm

Hi

Anybody knows how the non-standard speeds are recoded from arri D20?
Also is there any hardware that can take 1080 60p other than the srw-1 -> how do I get the footage to computer?

It depends what you're recording to. If you're going to tape (SRW-1), you're limited - as you say - to whatever the recorder's capable (24,25,29.97,30,50,60). But you can get 60p which is quite nice.

I believe the upcoming FlashMags will have more flexibility with respect to frame rates, but I haven't seen or used one yet. As you're probably aware, they're solid state 122GB 'magazines' that are about the same size as a 200' mag. I think they just record a series of .dpx files, so you can record at whatever frame rate the camera (or FlashMag) is capable of.

Hope that helped!

Tom

If you are reffering to Thompson Venom then this for sure does NOT record dpx frames - I had long discussion about that in IBC and the problem with dpx is too much overhead so the data is recorded as binary raw data and the only way to get it out from the venom back is to play it back over single or dual lane SDI - so I would need use some sort of SDI signal.

I have so far used blackmagic products for HD io and this product does not support 1080 60p (as of now - maybe in the future) so even if I recorde to srw-1 what systems are capable of ingesting the material?

No, I'm not referring to the Venom. The FlashMag is a different beast. As far as I know it's an ARRI-developed solid state recorder. But, as I said, I haven't seen or used one! I don't think it's been released yet. I'll ask Arri about it next time I talk to them.

In terms of ingest at 60p, your options are quite limited. Quantel's iQ/eQ will handle it happily, though.

cheers,

Tom

To ingest 60 frames per second captured material from SRW1 try playing it out of SRW1 or SRW 5000 decks at 24 or 25p.

Let me know how you get on.

Arri was going to brand the Venom with their own name, the flashpak.
Now both Thomson and Arri call it the "Venom flashpak"

The other thing is do any of the sr decks do 1080 to 720 downconvert - this can be intial workflow
Just to start with short films and ad's then the technology will follow

[Michael Brennan] "Arri was going to brand the Venom with their own name, the flashpak.

I stand corrected! Thanks Michael.
