JH-3 down conversion quality?
by Michael Lindsay on Sep 23, 2005 at 8:35:04 pm

Hi

Is it worth me playing around with the settings in a JH-3 to get a better downconverted picture? The SD output is a bit ropey at the moment. Or should I just hire a better deck? I suspect knocking back on edge enhancment would be were I would start?

thanks for any thought?

I've seen a post elsewhere that recommends turning down all the aperture correction and sharpening controls on sony F500 downconverter as low as possible. I think this goes for J-H3 as well and it sounds like that might help your problem.

I don't know if you'd get better quality out of F500 than out of J-H3. You might have to use a Tetranex or something similar to see a difference.

I'd love to see a down-converter comparison between J-H3 / F500 / Tetranex, AJA, Evertz, etc - if anyone had a chance to compare them.

Thanks for your input.

I've discussed this issue with a couple of people and the basic conclusion is the JH-3 doesn't have particularly good down conversion. Moving up the Sony VTR ladder is the easiest way to get OK quality.

What you said about sharpening is interesting. I've never seen a device (camcorder/cheap monitors/TV's and now downconverters/upconverters) that doesn't edge enhance far too much at 'factory setup'. Why do people insist on admiring the edgy/cutout/plastic/legobrick/bristle look?

thanks again

Michael
