Sony HDWD 2000 Deck question
by Mark Baird on Jun 10, 2005 at 8:29:52 pm

Sony makes a range of decks that not only play HDCam tapes but also play legacy formats such as DigiBeta, IMX, and other formats.

There is a well know problem with Sony DIGIBETA Decks that can play Beta SP tape also. The problem is that if you play the SP tape in the Digibeta deck, you significanly accelerate head wear on the Digibeta deck.

We are wondering, if we buy the HDWD 2000 and chose to play DigiBeta tape in it on a regular basis. Is the digibeta tape formulation significantly enough different from the HDCam tape formulation to create a similar problem?

We are looking at the HDWD 2000s as a very cost effective alternative to buying HD decks AND more digibeta decks. If we can get both in one package that will save us 40k per deck and also save valuable rack space, but if we do it, we want to understand the downside of using both tape formats (HDCam and DigiBeta) in the deck.

If anyone sees OTHER problems with this plan, I would also appricate hearing them.

Thanks

We use BetaSP and DigiBeta tapes in our HDW-M2000/1 all the time. I have not noticed any accelerated head wear.

I'm sure that you know, but these decks only record HDCAM not Digibeta. They obviously would only be replacing your Digibeta players.

Thanks for the info. And yes I knew they were only playback on legacy formats, but thanks for pointing it out to make sure.
