DVCPRO HD mysterious storage issues

I'm digitizing DVCPRO HD footage shot at 23.98fps into FCP through FW using AJ-HD1200A. I'm using G-Raid for storage that claims 100GB drive space amounts to around 1.75hr of footage. But that estimate seems wildly off - it seems I'm able to capture waaaay more and it freaks me out since I'm afraid I'm doing something wrong. I did check all the settings and clip info in FCP million times, opened digitized clips in QT to conform their settings and everything seems kosher yet I barely use the allocated space. The only possible explanation I have is that I'm capturing static camera shot of a barely moving talking head. Could that be the case?

That may be but it still seems like a huge discrepany between the estimated needed space and the actual size of a clip. For example a 5 or so min clip before capture requires 6.9GB space according to FCP (at the settings quoted above). But when actually captured it only takes up 2.8GB! I'll be able to squeeze 40 hrs of DVCPRO HD footage on a 500GB drive! Am I going crazy?

You may want to make sure you are importing the footage at full resolution. Check your settings. The footage should be 960x720 which is naitive DVCPRO HD.
Also, you may want to ask this question in the Varicam forum. There are lots of experienced uses there.
