What the heck is Apple's new HD DVD format
by Ben Waggoner on Apr 17, 2005 at 9:42:05 pm

So, DVD Studio Pro 4 announced today, and it can make HD DVD discs. Cool. But what are they?

System requirements are a G5 with 10.4 and DVD Player 4.6. Based on the UI, it looks like

Goes all the way up to 1080i
Follows SD DVD conventions very closely

I'm speculating that it's an extension of VOB to support HD resolutions for graphics, and HD H.264 for video elements. Red laser.

But what the heck format is that? Apple proprietary? Will there be Windows playback? VOB+H.264 would be easy for VLC and others to emulate, certainly.

Ben,

It appears to be basic SD-DVD style menu/authoring with H.264 HD video on existing DVD media and is HD-DVD compatible with the DVD Forum HD-DVD logo displayed on the Apple website.

On the Apple stand they had a Toshiba HD-DVD player playing an Apple authored disc.

I guess we will now more when it ships.

Looks good for HD Digital Rushes and HD client approval discs.

Its a disc that conforms to the HD-DVD spec 0.9. The delivery medium is a standard DVD until HD_DVD burners are practical. As Jonathan says its a workflow thing for Pixar, feature film rushes etc.

That makes sense to me.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of any good public resources for the HD-DVD or Blu-ray spec, or a description of it? I've got people asking for overviews and I'm not sure where to send them.
